Fresh Session : Wild Light on Laundromatinee.com

MP3 : Wild Light - California On My Mind (live on Laundromatinee.com)

In 2008, Wild Light won “Outstanding Rock Act of the Year” at the Boston Music Awards, but in 2009 the band, a handsome young quartet from New Hampshire, saw their profile raised considerably this year.  The band started off the year, along with Tapes N Tapes, on their first national tour.  Obviously they turned a few heads and ears because they were asked to open for The Killers tour not long after.  It was on this tour the band stopped through our Pop Machine Studio to record an acoustic session for Laundromatinee.com.

Wild Light's 2009 debut release, Adult Nights, was recorded in Los Angeles with reknowned producer Rob Schnapf.  Schnapf has worked with both Beck and Elliott Smith previously.  Adult Nights was released through Startime International.

The band  consists of guitarist Jordan Alexander, keyboarders and bassists Seth Pitman and Tim Kyle and drummer Seth Kasper.  Tim Kyle is a former schoolmate of Win Butler, of Arcade Fire, and was a founding member of that band.

Good Cover / Bad Cover? Clare & The Reasons : "That's All" by Genesis

I once got sucked into a battle royale of oddly epic proportions regarding the quality and work of Phil Collins/Genesis. Now it might be two very different arguments, when you consider Genesis works separately from Phil's solo work, but either way I have always found a lot to love with Phil. I mean, I grew up in the 80s. I thought sport coats, sleeves pushed up, with white tennis shoes were pretty badass.

Here, Clare & The Reasons give a pretty little orchestral version of Genesis' That's All. The song is on Clare & The Reasons' 2009 release Arrow. Good cover? Bad cover?

New remixes from NightWaves

A couple of our favorite Binary crew/Dreamwave DJs, NightWaves, have returned with new remixes for some great tracks.

(photo : Laurie Scavo)

First we have a remix of Flashmen's As The Night Rolls On. MOKB fell hard for the Flashmen after 2009's SXSW, and we are still eagerly awaiting a their cover of The Outfield's Your Love, supposedly(?) still in the works.

MP3 : Flashmen - As The Night Rolls On (NightWaves Remix)

Noah and the Whale is releasing their 2nd single, Love of an Orchestra, and the band asked Gold Panda and NightWaves to handle official remix duties for the track.

MP3 : Noah & The Whale - Love of an Orchestra (NightWaves Remix)

Finally, O'Spada, an electronic funked out band from Sweden, commissioned NightWaves to remix their latest song release, Ten Strikes.

MP3 : O'Spada - Ten Strikes (NightWaves' Sunday Morning Remix)

New Song : Ted Leo & The Pharmacists : Even Heroes Have To Die

After Touch & Go collapsed, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists found a new home at Matador Records. Ted and crew will release The Brutalist Bricks, in all formats, on March 9th, 2010. Today they released the first taste and some tour dates...

MP3 : Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Even Heroes Have To Die

Recorded through 2009 at Brooklyn’s Seaside Lounge, ‘Bricks’ could be the most confident, kinetic and varied work in Ted’s canon, and considering his body of work until now, that’s no easy claim to make. If you’ve seen Ted/Rx at any point in the past year, you’ve probably heard a few of the songs before, but the final studio versions pack a considerable punch." - Matablog

Sat, Dec 5th – Cambridge MA – Middle East

Thurs, December 10 – Spain – Madrid – Primavera Club ‘09
Friday, December 11 – Spain – Barcelona – Primavera Club ‘09

Fresh Session : Caitlin Rose on The Laundromatinee

MP3 : Caitlin Rose - Sinful Wishing Well (live on Laundromatinee.com)

Wild as mink but sweet as soda-pop, Nashville based Caitlin Rose specializes in the drink-away-your-heartache Country-with-capital-C music that brings rhinestone legends Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn to mind. There's a dose of the singer-songwriter, one voice/one guitar ethic of Kimya Dawson or Daniel Johnston thrown in there as well.

Her voice is both delicate and twangy, like a banjo with butterfly wings. Her 2008 EP Dead Flowers (her only release to date) showcases her fragility ("Answer in One of These Bottles") mixed with some healthy cynicism and humor ("Docket" and "Gorilla Man," respectively). She also gives us a great cover of The Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers," the second of this year after Deer Tick. - Brian J. Brake

MOKB interviews Scott Cudmore

His name may not be familiar to the MOKB faithful, but Toronto filmmaker Scott Cudmore has worked with a slew of our favorites--from Great Lake Swimmers to Phosphorescent to The Rural Alberta Advantage, as well as a band that should be one of your favo(u?)rites, Timber Timbre.

Cudmore's current project with AUX - a new cable television channel in Canada - is called CAMERA MUSIC. After considering the various directions the show could go in, "I ended up kind of going in the direction of The Take-Away Shows," Cudmore said. "Obviously Vincent Moon and that Internet series--he's the pioneer of anyone who's doing anything in this world. But I didn't want it to be exactly like that. So I try, for each episode, to stylize it and give it some kind of a narrative and build some kind of story around it."

Think intimate live performances with your favorite bands, home-movie style. MOKB recently got the chance to chat it up with Cudmore about CAMERA MUSIC in a Skype interview, which, in unrelated news, included a delightful cameo from his cat, Elliott.

Scott Cudmore on Bruce Peninsula episode of Camera Music: "They were playing a show in Peterborough, Ontario, which is about an hour and a half east of Toronto. But it was a crazy, crazy snow storm that day, and we couldn't get to Peterborough. The roads were completely shut down. It was like the worst snow storm last winter. So then, that became the narrative element (of the episode). The narrative of that was trying to get to Peterborough and not getting to Peterborough and then still trying to make a show out of that, and then the show ended up just being in their kitchen when we got back to the city."

CONTINUE READING THE REST OF THE INTERVIEW...

Scott Cudmore on Ghost Bees episode of Camera Music: "The Ghost Bees one was shot in Gravenhurst, (Ontario,) which is a kind of cottage community. The Ghost Bees have family up there, so we went up there and stayed in their aunt's place. There's a thing in Gravenhurst called The Tree Museum, and that's where we did most of it. It was kind of like them just touring me around this Tree Museum in the crazy snow and walking across frozen lakes and stuff. And there was this cave there, and that's where we filmed, in this snow cave, which I think was called the Beaver Dam or something. The Tree Museum is, like, not a tree museum. It's an outdoor art gallery in the woods that's been set up by a community of artists there. People have built things in the woods, and--yeah, that's exactly what it is. It's an art gallery in the woods. [laughs] So it was interesting. That thing we filmed in, that weird cave, was a giant installation. ... There's all sorts of stuff like that in The Tree Museum."

Scott Cudmore on Great Lake Swimmers episode of Camera Music: "Tony (Dekker) recorded the first Great Lake Swimmers record in an abandoned grain silo in Niagara Region. And we just kind of wanted to go back there because he hadn't been back there since he made that record, which was a long time ago. So we went back there, and that's what that episode was about, was returning to that space. This was a really amazing acoustic space, and that's why he chose it to record the record. It actually was really crazy, the way it sounded in that space. You can kind of hear the acoustics on the show, and you can definitely hear them on the record, but inside there, live, it's a totally, totally different thing."

On Repeat : Blakroc (The Black Keys ft. Ludacris + Ol' Dirty Bastard) : Coochie

Another one I played on the show today and maybe my most favorite track since Patrick Carney (while on tour with his Drummer project) busted it out at their Indianapolis show over the house PA.

Blakroc, the new collaboration between The Black Keys, Damon Dash, and a slew of great rappers (get the basics here), drops this Black Friday.

On Repeat : Jams Dean : Chicago Girls (The xx Heart Skipped A Beat Remix)

We played this new re-mash-mix from Jams Dean on our SIRIUS XM Blog Radio show today, but have had it on repeat since he sent it over a while back. Jams' early 90s-esque, unapologetically silly rap lyrics seem way more profound over top of The XX's Heart Skipped A Beat backing track.

MP3 : Jams Dean : Chicago Girls (The xx Heart Skipped A Beat Remix)

All you wanna-be-djs should check out Jams' remix contest. Jams Dean is also currently hard at work on his combination mixtape and zine titled The Criterion Collection, which he will release this December.
