Director Josef Kraska knows his 120 Minutes. His video for “Strawberry Skies,” Games’ Laurel Halo-guesting That We Can Play track, burrows into the ’80s at 3AM — a space Daniel Lopatin and Joel Ford inhabit regularly, at least in spirit — fixates on the song’s “call me up” line,” and stays there until you can almost smell the Aquanet.

The Beets, the Jackson Heights (via Uruguay) project of Juan Wauters, seem to show-up on more Brooklyn DIY bills than any other band I can think of … fitting for a group that remind me an older, grittier, less guarded NYC. I’ve seen folks reference the Ramones (maybe because they’re from Queens?), but I’m more reminded of Shimmy Disc via Uncle Wiggly, Fly Ashtray, etc. and the warping, quietly imploding ’60s-referencing pop stuff that might show up on a vintage Chemical Imbalance compilation (Thinking Fellers on their best behavior, et al). Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere recorded these two new tracks for the “Time Brought Age” 7″. Crystal Stilts’ JB Townsend mixed. The laconic A-Side features 12-string guitar, keyboards, tambourine, recorder, and a hazy urban pastoral feel. (They re-enter the garage for the 2-minute B-Side.) Someone makes a reference to the Stones’ Between The Buttons in the release’s press materials: Why not sync with the band’s humor (see Jagger-nodding cover), go for some version of the bad Beetween The Buttons pun, and call it a day? Well, the Andrew Bird show last night was a bust, but not a complete bust. The last of the tickets sold to the kids directly in front of us in line, so we didn't see the show...mainly because we didn't feel much like paying the scalper's premiums. But...MJ and I had a great evening of drinking with Eric of Marathon Packs. Can't say enough good things about this guy. A real music historian and scholar, and an excellent guy to boot. Hopefully, the first of many good nights with him...next time we'll try to actually see a show.

It's Super Bowl Sunday and we're just kickin' back watching Arena Football, snowboarding and the NBDL to get psyched up...riiiight. Oh, and last night's SNL. Prince was pretty solid...the skits were not. I'm debating skipping the Super Bowl all together and checking out She Want's Revenge at The Melody Inn tonight. Are they worth it? Is that basphemy? I'm just kinda in a Super Bowl slump.

Maybe we should try some 60's style/Beach Boys-esque pop goodness to put us in a shiny mood. The Explorer's Club sound like Southern California psyche-pop harmonists, but actually hail from the opposite coast in South Carolina. These Beatles/Beach Boys/Zombies sounds are nothing new or groud-breaking, but these songs and sounds still transcend all ages and ears and are universally enjoyable.

The Melody Function were formed on a hot Kentucky night in the fall of 2004 over large amounts of Budweiser and Beamish and a love for indie music. The sound of this 3-piece outfit fuses elements of psychedelic mod rock with twee and pop "Yeh-Yeh". Lots of good indie bands and tunes coming out of Kentucky these days kids, sit up and listen.

Darren Jessee started Hotel Lights after many years of writing songs, playing drums and touring with Ben Folds Five. Darren co-wrote Brick and Song For The Dumped. After leaving the now-famous pop group, Jessee moved from North Carolina to New York City and quietly played solo shows around town for a while.

After toiling around without much happening, he moved back to NC to put together his ideal band: former Archers of Loaf drummer Mark Price, Roger Gupton (bass, vocals), and Chris Badger (keyboards, guitar). They took their time arranging and rehearsing, eventually recording at the Sound of Music in Virginia, with producer and guitarist Al Weatherhead, now a full-time member of the band. Adam Scheslinger, of Fountains Of Wayne, also helped out on some of the arrangements.

Jessee has the genealogy, as Fold's influence is highly apparent. This is a very good album and very reminiscent of BF5 early work.

Internet Radio News: WOXY
I was supposed to post on this yesterday as MJ was like, "This is big news, you better let the peeps know!" I forgot, and furthermore, I think it's really sad news. Moreover, I hope you support them if you are a WOXY listener. Yesterday the online internet station, WOXY.com, announced that they are going listener supported.

WOXY says that they want to keep providing the best in new music while at the same time running an honest business (ie: providing health benefits to employees, paying royalties, handle the cost of reliable streaming, and filing taxes). At the same time advertisers do not have a steady grasp on who’s listening when and who the audience is, regardless of the fact that they are intrigued with the idea of it all. In short, they aren’t willing to pour in tons of ad sales money.

For the price of $9.95 a month the station will offer the premium service for 24-hour, true broadband, CD-quality streams. They will also offer subscribers special perks down the line. In the meantime, until February 13 that is, they are leaving their 64 kbps streams running. For people that do not subscribe to the station, they will continue to offer a low bandwidth stream for free. Chris Mills - The Wall To Wall Sessions

Chris Mills is a highly-praised and well-respected Chicago singer/songwriter who is now based in NYC. Despite this praise, he's still remained in relative obscurity to the general public. Maybe if word gets out on this latest (Oct. '05) effort that will change.

Mills really pushed himself in new and different directions on his 4th (full) and latest album, The Wall To Wall Sessions. It's being praised as his finest effort to date. He's added horns and strings to create an orchestral pop sound crossed with his all ready enjoyable alt-country/americana stylings...the songs have a previously unexplored depth to them. Instead of laboring over the process, tracking each instrument for months and cleaning up everything during mixing, Mills rehearsed and recorded the album in only two-and-a-half days, capturing everything live on a two-track tape machine - no overdubs.

"If you listen to old Atlantic R & B from the 50s, even the early Elvis records, they just sound good," Mills says. "It's only a couple mikes and a couple guys in a room -- a really rudimentary recording setup. The vocals distort and overdrive and everything -- and that's the take they keep. Whereas today, somebody would go into Pro Tools and redraw the shape of a wave form to take the distortion out. I just wanted to go in the complete opposite direction from that." - Chris Mills

Mills is joined by musicians who have worked with Wilco, Sea and Cake, Giant Sand and Head of Femur (singers Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor lend excellent vocal support as well), but it's Mills' vision and songwriting that is the heart of the project. His friend, David Nagler's arrangements have also been highly praised. This is the first time Mills has given up control of the arrangements and he has said that he is very happy he did.

Well no one ever likes who I pick, but the Belle and Sebastian Contest winner is Poker who chose Hawk & Animal as his best tandem. See, he tugged at my heartstrings with that one. My older brother Chris and I used to pretend we were Hawk & Animal when I was like 10 years old. It was awesome. He'd kick my ass all over the living room, but I didn't care because he wanted me to be part of The Road Warriors with him. I always had to be Hawk, which was fine, but Animal was really the major badass. I always wanted to be one of them for Halloween, I may have to do that this year. I think it was just that we loved face paint. The Ultimate Warrior was another face-painted wrestler we loved. Maybe there is some psychology in that...paint and masks...you can imagine yourself behind that paint, as a kid, you know? Anyway, congrats Poker, contact me by email with your address.

Super Bowl:
Who you got?! I'm going with the Steelers in a really close game. Like 4th quarter field goal close, but still a high scoring affair. Joey Porter's been talking shite to meaningless tight ends all week, but this game is gonna be all about the run. Who can run and who can't. Oh and Heath Miller, big day buddy, big day. Seattle sucks against TEs.

It doesn't matter to me though, I'm still in a funk about the Colts not showing up in the biggest game since they've been in Indy. Edge said yesterday he doesn't expect to return, but that's not a suprise. Colts prez Bill Polian has been eluding to that since last season. Colts will likely draft Laurence Maroney from Minnesota to replace him, if you ask me.

Live Shows:
Man, MJ got us tickets to go see Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins down in Nashville on March 26th, but the bummer is Deadstring Brothers play here in Indy that weekend, so I'll have to miss them. I contacted Chandra and Leigh to tell them we would down to see them, so hopefully I get to hang with them for a few...and meet Jenny Lewis. We get to see some great friends while we're down there as well and that's always fun.

My man, Cary Brothers is coming back to Indy on March 8th with KT Tunstall, but that same night Metal Hearts is playing in Bloomington and I'd really like to see them. I hate double-bookings! argh. Let's see what else? I'll be seeing Matt Pond Pa and Dios Malos together here on February 18, two bands I've never seen live.

Thinking about going to Bonnaroo this year. I got a buddy who is a grizzled 4-year vet who's invited me to go along. Anyone else ever been? Secrets to survival and kick-ass good time?

This weekend, we're gonna head down to Bloomington to try and see Andrew Bird, the show is sold out, but we have an inside track on some tix thanks to Eric @ Marathon Packs. We're not sure if we'll get them, but keep you fingers crossed.

Mylo - Destroy Rock and Roll

Hailed in the U.K. by NME and Q as "the saviour of dance music" and "whip-smart electronic eclecticism", Scottish producer/artist Mylo will cross the Atlantic, or at least his latest album will, and make his stateside debut with the innovative Destroy Rock Roll on Breastfed Records February 7th. This album is full of funky, body swaying, staccato hopping beats that are sure to get you moving. Drop The Pressure is probably my favorite track and I'm sure it sets some kind of record for number of f-bombs dropped in one song.

Stateside Dance and French House music has seen a rapid decline in popularity, at least in the midwest, but this is an album you can listen to from start to finish and find many tracks you'll enjoy. Mylo was forced to cancel his forthcoming tour dates in the U.S. due to a viral hearing condition.

Mylo (aka Myles Macinnes) is an Oxford educated and former BBC researcher from Scotland's Isle of Skye. This year has seen him remixing tracks for the likes of The Scissor Sisters, Sia, Kylie Minogue and The Killers.

Grandaddy calls it quits. In an interview with Pitchfork yesterday, frontman Jason Lytle revealed that Just Like the Fambly Cat, due out May 9 on V2, will be the last Grandaddy album, and that the band has no plans to tour.

Decemberists fans, myself included, can rejoice for a second time, as Colin Meloy's solo show at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia this Saturday, January 28, will be the latest webcast in NPR.org's "All Songs Considered" program. Both Meloy's and opener Laura Veirs' sets will be streamed live in their entireties on NPR.org starting around 7:30 PM EST Saturday, and will be available as a free mp3 download from the website's permanent archive starting Sunday, January 29.

Diddy Says 2006 Is The Year He'll Get Bad Boy Back On Track : Seriously Diddy, the game has passed you by. No one cares about the Notorious B.I.G. anymore. Do they? I don't. Actually, I know they do as Duets: The Final Chapter, is approaching platinum status and will be the first Bad Boy album to reach that million-plus plateau in some time, but seriously, it's time for something new. Diddy is a good guy, he does good things overall, but he and Bad Boy haven't been pertinent in the rap game for many years.

Amanda and Joe Ziemba are another one of those married duos that we are seeing become more prevalent in indie rock these days. These two have a little more edge than some of the other groups, and in their latest effort they touch on everything from self doubt to sexism to exhilarating hope in 13 songs in just 36 minutes. Their relationship and closeness is evident in the lyrics and vocals of each of these songs and while they are a small band, they make a big noise.

White Light Riot is another band from talent-rich Minneapolis, MN and their debut release, The Dark is Light Enough EP, is a collective effort between the band and, MOKB fav, producer Erik Appelwick of Vicious Vicious. Applewick also helped produce Tapes 'N Tapes' The Loon.

WLR's music is full of energy and ambition, with powerful drums and bass that set the foundation, and distinctive vocals and interplaying guitar lines. Most of the guys aren't even 21, but they want to be rock stars and they have the stuff it takes be one. Editors live show has been wowing the NYC kids as the Mercury Lounge and Rothko hosted sold-out shows by the band recently. Their newest album, The Back Room will soon be released in the US, so, if you haven't all ready, you should start feeling the buzz around these guys. They've drawn numerous comparisons to Interpol, but I actually think I like them more than Interpol. This song is great, it's the B-Side to Munich.

Parlour Boys are Kentucky natives and haven't even been around a full year, but they have a new EP out and they continue the dance/punk/new wave feel of bands like their Kentucky counterparts, VHS or Beta. It might be tough for them hailing from the same state and having a sound so close to another fairly successful native band, but then again, it may only help them. They're young and I'm sure their sound will mature and evolve, but they're off to a great start.

Sweet Teeth is a band from Washington, DC via Sugar Land, TX, and there is very little out there about them, but they've made their entire album, Bearclaw, available for download at their website. That's pretty awesome...there is no way to buy the album, according to lead singer Chris, so just enjoy!

Credit for this band goes to the good ears of MOKB reader Vinay, who shares with us Toronto band, October Guard. It's a three-man-band, made up of Brett Clarkson on guitar, Michael McGrath on drums and Randall Roland Savoy on vocals and bass guitar. They have a solid art-school post-punk sound in the vein of Bloc Party and Gang Of Four with a dash of Joy Divison moodiness.

Their latest release is still only available at their shows, but should be released soon according to their website. Sooner Or Later is very Bloc Party-esque with some great guitar riffs. October Guard's MySpace.

I'm no DJ, sometimes I wish I was...It looks fun and I think I'd rock the house if anybody here in Indiana listened to much more than the crap spewing out of the local teeny-pop or easy-rock radio station. Seriously, don't get me started...ok, I'm started. Radio in Indianapolis is totally the hellspawn of all that is Michael Bolton and Samatha Mumbo. It's the worst. The stations that try to pretend they are indie or cutting edge or anything more than a John Mellancamp, System of A Down or Green Day recycle bin are so full of it. The promotion of shows is terrible unless it's in the Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffet or Aerosmith genres (who are all great live, but please some variety!) Seriously, the local high school's station is the closest thing to hearing anything new or different - and I give props to those kids...holla! Anyway, It's sad. Now, there is a little bit of a scene, but you gotta work for it! It just shouldn't be like that. This is a pretty big city and there are 2 colleges and good venues. I know I'm just complaining, so I'll move on...

Back to my original point: This new iPod DJ Mixer is sweet...I want one. Of course, I'd only use it at the parties the Lovely and I have...speaking of which...Thanks to all who came out to last weekends. It was fun and we made enough to cover the Lovely's L&L Society pledge, which was the goal. Ah, off track again...

Arrested Development & The Contender: Update

So my girl D is all up in arms about FOX actually considering NOT renewing Arrested Development next season. She thinks this is a ridiculous notion and Dodge agrees. I've heard the grumblings before, but figured it was just silly talk...maybe not. She sent me this website: www.getarrested.com and says to go to the site, where you
can pledge to watch the show in hopes of saving it. There are some reallyfunny clips that have never been seen before, as well.

So Juan had just enough in the tank this week on The Contender to knock Tarick out of the competition with a 5 round decision. Tarick had a lot of heart, but three years of "ring rust" were evident as Tarick ran out of gas by round 3. Juan wasn't nearly as impressive as I thought he might be, flailing around with wild bombs that seldom landed effectively. It was enough as he survived and advanced. Tarick was all class in the loss.

It's got Chuck D on it and anything with Chuck D is f'ing sweet. That guy has the best voice. If I had to choose one guys voice to have, it would be Chuck D. Seriously, Public Enemy changed my life. Dodge and pal El Toro went to Budweiser Fight Night boxing last night at The Pepsi Colliseum and watched dudes and chicks beat each other into submission. It was great. Dodge is a lova of the "Sweet Science".

Never talked about The L Word or Carnivale this week, but both were good...actually Carnivale was great, L Word was ok. The new opening to L Word is terrible...I hate it. Deadwood starts this Sunday, so Dodge is eagerly awaiting that.

He's also happy DVR will be hooked up today! Hell mutha f'ing yes. DVR is also life changing, I swear.

Weekend Wrap Up & The Flaming Lips

Brief Weekend Synopsis:

Dodge had an outstanding weekend. Dodge and his lovely wife's house has been a zoo lately. We have a new roommate and we have had all sorts of people in from all over all last week and this weekend. Dodge's best friend, Jojo, came in for a stay and then Dodge's lovely wife's best friend, D., came in with 2 of her friends and stayed...3 very lovely ladies. Nice.

Friday night Dodge went with other best friend, J-Bobo, and his girl to see Pravada play the Music Mill. They opened for the Ditty Bops and Shore. Neither oif which were that impressive. Pravada played a solid set though and I had fun hanging out with the band after the show with J-Bobo and his girl.

Saturday night it was out with the lovely wife and her friends. We met up with a big slew of people down in the Ripple and had a drunken good time. It was one of those times where you have so many people around you that you know and are friends with, it feels like you own the bar. Everyone and everything else is irrelavant. Always a good time. Dodge's goal was a threesome, but he botched that up. Close, but no cigar as they say. OK, maybe I wasn't that close.

Sunday was a day of serious recovery. The only show I managed to watch was the season premier of Deadwood on HBO. It was a great opener and packed in a lot of "oh man, what's gonna happen with this?!"'s. I can't wait to see how it all plays out. Such a good show. Oh, and if you did watch Deadwood, did you see the promo for "Rome"? Holy shitecakes, that looks good. I can't wait for the Fall of 2005 now. I love HBO.

Today's (and many other times) unhealthy indulgence: You Got Served

Seriously, could anything be so bad and so good?! Actually, there is tons of stuff like that. The Lovely Wife for instance. (Just kidding, Honey...sort of...No, I'm kidding...maybe) Anyway, back to the point. I go home for lunch most days. Today, You Got Served is on. I mean, it just yanks me in. Omarion and Marques Houston are hilarious, not really in that they are actually hilarious, it's more in that unintentional comedy kinda way. Like, so bad I can't help but laugh and like them. The ultimate is Wayne though, the white boy who doesn't know it. His angry facial expressions can carry the movie by themselves. If these kids never spoke, it would be the greatest movie ever. No talking, lots of dancing and Wayne making angry facial expressions: keys to success. If you've never seen this movie, you have to. It's not good, I'll tell you that upfront, so you have to know that going in, but as long as you do, it rules. Lil' Kim is another outstanding addition in this movie. The Lovely Wife and I have had actual battles over whether Lil' Kim is hot or not. I love being married, I really do. I mean, It is an on-going battle. Every time Lil' Kim pops up on the TV at any time it's like we pick up where we left off in the last arguement. So, help us here: Lil' Kim, Hot or Not? Now, this is just physical attractiveness. She's a hoodrat skank, we all know that, but is she a hot one? Does the fact that she is a hoodrat skank make her hotter?

I just dance around in my living room like the ridiculous white boy that I am wishing I could move like those kids. Why?! I don't know why, but I love it. The Lovely Wife and I have contests...mano y mano as they say. Sometimes I get served, sometimes she gets served. Anyway, You Got Served is as the movie says, "Off da chain yo!"

Ahhh, St. Patty's...Dodge's second favorite holiday. Well, contrary to my initial plans, I came to work today. The big parties don't start until later and I figured I could be a responsible adult once in a while instead of reliving old college glory days. I know, I'm a puss. There really is no good excuse. I should be at home drinking, preparing for the UK game. Papa Dodge got tickets to the games, but is taking Dodge's older brother to today's game since I decided to work. Man, I'm a sellout. There is still Saturday's game.

Well, I plan on making up for it tonight. I'm going to drink my liver into submission and dance like a leprechaun. The lovely wife and I will be heading downtown to the Caladagh Tent Party, an annual tradition, with J-bobo and other friends. It should be excellent. Downtown will be packed because of the tournament, so lots of new people means lots of fun.

Well, with close to a thousand visitors to the site yesterday...three of you donated to the L & L Society. Twenty dollars total. I don't have any more to say about that. I'm pissed at all of you and you hurt Mr. Scruff's feelings. He's gonna let it go because he's psyched for UK and St. Patty's Day. Look at him, he's all ready half-cocked.

We are getting close to our goal. We will be having a big party the second week or so in April at which we will be auctioning and raffling off seven of Dodge's original oil paintings for the charity. It should be a great time. It will be here in Indianapolis. Entrance will be $10 or it will be included with the purchase of a $50 raffle ticket to enter you in the drawing for one of seven original paintings by Dodge. There may be more up for raffle as Dodge is checking with some of his local artist friends for donations. What an awesome chance to get original artwork for as low as $50! I mean, some of these are large paintings! Anyway, if you think you'll be in the area and want to come, email me for the details.

The date will probably be April 9th. Actually, I'm sure that will be the date. There will be wine, beer, great people, music and good eats. I will post the paintings and work that will be up for the raffle somewhere for view...I need to take care of that. Two paintings will be up for silent auction.

Clay is a funny one, but only because he's that total religious guy that is really gay and if he ever came out it would be hell to pay. I know one of those guys actually. Has anyone who reads this ever tried out for Idol? Please tell me about it!

A jam-band by nature with the feel of a big-tent revival - Robert Randolph is a master of the peddle steel guitar. The Pharcyde is an alternative rap/hip hop quartet from South Central L.A. They have been around a long time, but only have 4 albums to show for it. They released their 4th, Humboldt Beginnings, this past January.

The Pharcyde have been a favorite of Dodge's since he first heard Passing Me By and rushed out and bought Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. Seriously, that song is on my Top 100 songs of all time list. I don't know where, but on it's there.

Pete Yorn is kind of an unappreciated guy these days. He looked destined for stardom after his release of Musicforthemorningafter, but sort of fell off the face of the planet not long afterwards. He toured, I saw him, was more impressed by the Detroit City Cobras and kind of forgot about him. Musicforthemorningafter was a good album though. I used to listen to it over and and over for a while there. He followed it up with Day i Forgot, but the it was more like the album I forgot. I just didn't have the same level of excitement. Anyway, he's good so hopefully he'll come strong with some new stuff soon. He's touring and put out a live album as well as having been on quite a few compilations and tributes since, so he's staying busy.

The O.C. was a total waste last night. Complete fluff...the feel good episode. Getting locked in the mall and playing roller hockey?! BARF!!!! I'm pissed. It was an hour of my life wasted that was for sure. The whole thing was just setting up the Marissa and Ryan reunion tour. Last night's episode featured tracks off the new forthcomming Beck album. I think what I've heard of the album rocks, others may disagree, but I love it. Well done, Beck.

Next week's episode looks better, so things better rebound quickly! I mean, how do you go from the Rainy Day Women episode, which was so good, to this week's crapfest?! DOUBLE BARF!!! ack...

Sooo...I don't really talk about it much, but Dodge is a HUUUUGE University of Kentucky basketball fan. HUGE. It's been a rough past 8 days as the Cats have lost twice to Florida, a team they have dominated in recent years.

The good news? The Cats got a 2 seed and play their first round of the NCAA Tournament here in Indianapolis. Will Dodge be there? If he has to sell his kidney. Star freshman, Rajon Rondo went to Dodge's high school in Louisville, so Dodge feels even more connected this season. Actually, I don't know if that is possible...I am such a super-fan-wannabe for The Cats it borders on spazzafantastic.

Papa Dodge says he will use some of his "connections" to get us some tickets. We'll see if the old man still has it! Opening day is St. Patty's Day though which is a real bummer because that is like my 2nd official holiday other than The Kentucky Derby. This will be a great way to spend it, but I usually like to spend it in a drunken haze with the lovely wife and tons of friends. I'll just have to meet everyone out at the tent parties after the games. The city should be rocking that night with it being St. Patty's and all the people being in town.

University of Louisville got jobbed royally by getting a 4 seed and a match-up with Georgia Tech in the second round. They deserved much better.

Caroline Bermudez reports:
Despite their acronymic claim that "No One Ever Really Dies," the genre-bending trio N.E.R.D.-- Pharrrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay-- have broken up due to a label dispute. Soundgenerator reports that singer Pharrell Williams recently spoke to BBC Radio 1's Jo Whiley, declaring, "N.E.R.D. is dead. I don't agree with the management at Virgin Records so we're done."

The exact nature of the dispute remains unclear but fear not, the Neptunes production team will remain intact-- future collaborations are scheduled with Rosco P. Coldchain, FAM-LAY, Vanessa Marquez, Clipse, Slim Thug, N.O.R.E., Beanie Sigel, Mariah Carey, P. Diddy, Mary J. Blige, and Omarion. Shay will go back to doing whatever it was he did in the first place. About the state of the Neptunes and the possible future of N.E.R.D., Williams told Whiley: "Me and Chad still do what we do in the studio, Shay is still our best friend, you know, perhaps we'll do some music for our fans and leak it to the Internet or something, who knows? I've been very quiet about it for the last two years. I'm not here to slander or throw dirt, I'm just not happy so therefore N.E.R.D. is expired."

N.E.R.D. released two albums, In Search Of... (which was issued twice-- once with typical Neptunes production stylings and once recorded with a live band), and Fly or Die. Serving as a departure from their hitmaking production duties for the likes of Jay-Z, Nelly, No Doubt, and Kelis, N.E.R.D. had relatively few hits and allowed Williams and Hugo to explore their pocket-protector leanings through live instrumentation, Beatlesque psychedelia, new wave, and references to outer space.

So, that was sweet. Thanks Mista Popo. Not only that, my beloved Kentucky Wildcats scrapped and clawed their way past Cincinnati this past weekend here in 'Naptown. Dodge, The Lovely Wife, Dodge's older brother and 2 friends went to the games this weekend. It was loads of fun. That Illinois team looks tough, but I think the Cats could take them. Well, maybe.

My bracket is toast. I usually enter a lot of pools, but only did one this year...Thank God. I was picking Wake Forest to play UNC in the Final, but that got waxed this past weekend. It has been an upset crazy NCAAs this year. I love that though, I don't care that I threw away my money. The tournament is so much better when the little guys are shining and showing the powerhouses that they can play too. I live for the day some 12 seed takes it all the way home.

Personally I have the belief that if you've heard one Jack Johnson song, you've sort of heard them all...actually, that's J-Bobo's thought on JJ, but I agree for the most part. I guess the difference is that I generally still like him and his music anyway. He didn't really break any new ground on his latest album, just kinda stuck with what worked the first couple times around. I think his latest is better than his second effort, but just not as interesting as Brushfire Fairytales. I've was hanging out on the beach this past week, so maybe that's all this is.

Holy geez...so UK squeeks by in the first round against gritty "low-major" Eastern Kentucky. A tough win in the first round can be good for the next game, but it can also mentally wipe a team. The Wildcats need a serious "gut-check" because they have been playing like kittens.

Scruffs is mentally exhausted after the tough opening round win, but is confident the Cats will reach the Final Four!

Alabama got beat by UW-Milwaukee...why do I have any faith in SEC teams outside of UK? The coach of UWM was the coach down at University of Southern Indiana, in Evansville, IN, while I spent my college years at University of Evansville. You all should know that Dodge is a lova of the "Sweet Science" of boxing, so you know he is watching, but the question to you is: Have you guys been watching The Contender on NBC? Holy shitecakes, it's good. I hate most reality shows these days, but I'm hooked on this one. Alfonzo Gomez whooped 21-0 stud Peter Manfredo's ass the other night. I mean, everyone was afraid of Manfredo, and with good reason, and Gomez just called him out, stepped up and owned his ass. It was a thing of beauty.

The unintentional comedy of Sly Stallone trying to put words and sentences together is great too. I don't know who I'm pulling for. I didn't want either Manfredo or Gomez to lose the other night, so I think this will be a weekly battle for me.

I can't wait until Ishe and Ahmed throw down. Ishe is gonna put the hurt on!

Anyway, check this show out Thursday nights on NBC.

Fox Orders 3rd Season of The O.C.

Fox has ordered a third season of its drama The O.C., which was moved this season to the difficult 8 p.m. Thursday time period.

The O.C. is first in the time period ratings among adults 18-34 and teens. The drama has boosted the network's rating in the period by 72 percent over last year among adults 18-49 and 111 percent among adults 18-34.

"The show has performed exceptionally well, achieving hit status on a highly competitive night and giving us a solid anchor on Thursdays for the first time in years," said Gail Berman, Fox entertainment president.

Oh thank God. Seriously, I was terrified. Whatever. Of course the O.C. will be back next season, and for the next 5 seasons at least. Douchebags...who writes this crap? More imporantly...what douchebags read this crap?! Oh yeah...me. I love the O.C.

Actually, I can't wait for The Office. I love that dude, Brick, from Anchorman..."LOUD NOISES!!!" hahahhahahahahhahahahhahaaaa....

The Big Payback...

I'm back from my mini-break today...Florida was rainy, but we still had a great time. The ocean was angry! There were some big waves for that area of Florida and the undercurrent was strong, but The Lovely Wife and I did some boogie boarding and got a little sun. We ate at some nice places, got drunk, did some shopping, hung out with friends and most of all relaxed! It was nice. Good times, good times...

Unfortunately, now I am utterly depressed. No more vacation for a while, my beloved Kentucky Wildcats lost a heartbreaker to Michigan State and I have a ton of work to catch up on. BARF!!! OK, enough crying you big baby...we're here for the music...ah, I'm depressed about that too! Ryan Adams will be playing near Indy on May 6th and Kings Of Leon will be playing here in Indy on May 6th as well. I can't go to either. May 6th is the Day Before Derby! Kentucky Oaks day. The Lovely and I will be in Louisville preparing for our favorite annual holiday - KY Derby...bummer. Well, I will survive as they say.

I can't even talk about the UK game. If you didn't see it, it was a classic. Patrick Sparks' 3 pointer that sent it into the first overtime was unbelievable. Kelenna Azubuike not getting the final shot off at the end of the first overtime was unforgivable along with UK's inability to hit free throws, the easiest shot in basketball, which was also unforgivable. Tubby coached great and kept them in a position to win. I'm a little sick to my stomach just thinking about it all again. I will miss Chuck Hayes, that guy is a warrior. OK, enough crying...

Oh yeah, thanks for all the comments lately. I guess to get you guys to speak up I either have to go away for a while or show pictures of The Lovely Wife. hmmm....

Born in Adelaide, she was raised on the hippiest street in Australia, and her dad briefly played guitar in uncle Colin’s band Men At Work. Early appearances singing Shangri-Las songs aside, Sia’s musical leanings didn’t get serious until she joined jazz-funk bar band Crisp at 17.

After three years fronting Crisp, Sia packed her bags and headed off with an open ended ticket on a round the World trip finally ending up in London. In 2000 Sia scored a Top 10 hit with her Prokofiev-sampling “Taken For Granted” single and followed it up with her acclaimed debut album, “Healing Is Difficult”.

Sia is perhaps best known however for her considerable contribution to Zero 7’s hugely successful and widely acclaimed “Simple Things” album. In fact, Sia credits the biggest influence on her new album as touring with Zero 7. “That’s when I actually started listening to music,” she says with a grimace of embarrassment.

“While we were on tour, the guys were always talking about artists I’d never heard of, so I started listening to their James Taylor, Nick Drake, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Django Bates CDs. And it all just really blew me away.”

“Colour The Small One’s” lyrical roots, however, run much deeper. ‘Bully’, the track she wrote with Beck has similarly serious roots.

“There was this kid at school who I used to be really cruel to, and I’ve felt bad about it ever since. It got to the point where I was having nightmares about.

Sia met Beck at a festival in LA, when he asked her to perform a duet with him after watching her perform. ‘You’re The One That I Want’ from Grease, has never quite sounded the same since.

Other standout tracks on “Colour The Small One” include “Numb”, “The Church Of What’s Happening Now”, the lilting pianos and claustrophobic beats of ‘Breathe Me’, ‘Sunday’s’ enchanting harmonium and breathless chant and the muffled rhythm track and sensual cinematic strings of ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’.

Dodge just got 2 free tickets to see The Zutons tomorrow night at The Music Mill. Nice.

The Zutons are from Liverpool and call their music a unique blend of funky 70s rock and saxophonic soul. You'll have to check them out at iTunes though because I can't find any right now for you.

I gotta bail on poker night which sucks, but we do that every month, so you have to make some tough choices sometimes.
