Photo Recap : Bon Iver : Rock For Riley at The Vogue : 040408

Friday was the culmination of almost a year of musical excitement for me. I finally had the opportunity to sit down with Justin Vernon and his band, the project known as Bon Iver. I completely "fanned-out". It was a great experience. Bon Iver came by our studio, recorded three beautiful tracks, and we recorded what we hope will be three very complimentary videos to go with their recordings. I can give you a taste, but you'll have to stayed tuned for the rest. Hopefully it won't be too long before we can share them all with you.

Bon Iver - Flume (live in the MOKB studio)

Later that evening, Bon Iver opened for the "Welcome Home Show" for Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos...the annual Rock For Riley big show benefit concert. I was worried that the crowd would talk over Justin and crew, but Justin had told me earlier in the day that I would be suprised by how much they were going to rock out. He wasn't lying, by the second track they had the audience's full attention, and they kept it the rest of the way. Many in attendance saying Bon Iver stole the show. I love both bands enough not to say the same - I'd say they put on equally excellent sets, leading to an amazing evening of music.

12 Talk back to yo' mama!:

At 2:23 PM, Anonymous eric spat...

It was a great show. I was a little bummed too that the crowd had a bit of a lack of manners and seemed that more were there to be seen talk rather than see the band, but I guess that is to be expected at a sold out bar on friday night.

I really do think Bon Iver stole the show. As much as I want to root for Margot, being the "hometown team" and all, I have a hard time liking them sometimes. I realize it's super cool for pseudo rock and roll stars to appear on stage with an "I could care-less" attitude, but I was hoping they would show a bit more humility and appreciation in front of the hometown crowd. Edwards seemed to be in a bad mood most of the night and reluctantly played through the crowd favorites a little less than enthusiastically. Speaking of manners, the "look-at-me" auxillary percusionist decided it would be a good idea to melodramatically lite up a cigarette about half-way through the set at a non-smoking show benefiting a children's hospital. I guess that being the "other" drummer leaves time to indulge in such pretense.

Well, I didn't mean for that to turn into a whine-fest, but I guess I just never understood why Margot gets all the praise they do, especially when I see them live and it looks like they don't even appreciate it.

Agreed, they looked less than enthused to be playing the other night. I love Margot, but I have to say that everytime I see them, their live show gets worse. The lead singer looked wasted and was trying to provoke the crowd by being a smart-ass and they just looked tired on stage. Bon Iver stole the show and everybody I was around that had no clue about him before hand could not stop talking about him.

They have been in Chicago making a record for three months. I'd guess they are tired. They put on a great show. The new songs are great. Bon Iver was great, but in no way did they, "steal the show".

i can't wait to see the bon iver videos!

I guess I just love Richard's on-stage demeanor...his attitude is sometimes what makes the show really great. I think they were pretty exhausted...the fact we got to hear ANY new songs was a blessing.

I thought the whole show was pretty fantastic.

@dodge and anonymous at 3:28:

Maybe I am being a bit harsh because I soooo desperately want to LOVE a hometown band from indy that does something great. Maybe they were tired.

On the other hand, I hate to look at things like that... I don't know that it was a "blessing" that we got to hear new stuff... shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't they feel blessed that they even have an audience willing to listen? And in regards to their possible exhaustion, shouldn't that not matter? By profession they are entertainers... they make their living by entertaining an audience... tired or otherwise.

Everyone has an off day, and I don't doubt that even though they put on the heir of being cool and confident, they were likely nervous to debut some new songs, and likely a bit rusty from the live stage... I just wish they were a bit more likable and a little less hate-able with their pretentious affectations.

By the way, today is my first day to post a comment here at MOKB. I'd like to formally thank Dodge for running such a fantastic site and doing all the things you do (can't wait for the Bon Iver videos). Dodge, I think you deserve a lot of credit for the little music scene we've developed here recently in indy. I can't help but wonder if we would've had a packed house on friday if it werent for you. Thanks.

Don't feel bad for your review...I can definitely see where you're coming from. The fact that it was a charity show, playing in front of many people who haven't seen them or were only casual fans...for a children's hospital...they could've shown a little more onstage charisma...and no smoking. Richard was hostile at times and probably didn't score a lot of new fans that show.

Thanks for your kind words. The scene is here, just needs a jumpstart of diversity now and then...that's what MOKB is trying to throw in!

Eric, you speculating on how the band should 'feel' and their attitudes onstage are proof that we, as fans, shouldn't be concerned with that. I can assure you (as someone who's seen them dozens of times since their debut show as a 5-piece), their attitudes didn't make the songs sound any better or worse. And I can also assure you (as a close friend of the band's) that they realize how lucky they are to be doing what they're doing for a living. If it comes off otherwise, oh well.

It shouldn't be magnified too much, because it really isn't that deep, my man.

At 5:19 PM, Anonymous Joe spat...

I have neither an opinion here or there, but Anon 4:58, what makes your opinion of them more valid. That is how you feel, but it doesn't mean that Eric has to have the same impression. Also, you being being such a close and dear friend, if anything, makes your opinion less valid, as it hard to see it as unbiased. But, hey, since it is not too deep, you really should not of had the need to respond or attack Eric, as it seemed you did.

Joe, did I attack Eric? It wasn't the intent, and reviewing what I wrote, I'm struggling to find the attack.

My whole point (which isn't any more or less valid because of me knowing or not knowing the band -- is Dodge's opinion of the band less valid because he knows them, or everyone else in Indy who knows them?) is that if Eric chooses to assume some of the things that he clearly stated he does assume about them because of their demeanor onstage, well, he's going to be misguided. That's a choice of his own, and shouldn't be thrown on the band.

This was my 4th time seeing Bon Iver live and it was their best performance yet. They definitely stole the show. It was also my 2nd time seeing Margot. First show was great, but this time I was not impressed. Their performance lacked heart, feeling, and was pretty much boring. I ended up leaving early.

no stealing of show. If anything, I think margots new songs are tougher to get and they will probably shed some of the people who liked the first cd so well. they are still a young band and im excited to hear what they come up with next. I dont know anyone in the band. richard might be a dick in real life but I think he's got something going on.

love the blog by theway. Stumbled on it this morning.
