Jacob Golden : Revenge Songs

In the upcoming weeks, I am going to try to highlight artists who will be performing at South by Southwest this year. The first artist I am going to highlight released one of my favorite albums last year. His name is Jacob Golden and the album is Revenge Songs. Revenge Songs has been catching a lot of buzz across the pond and Golden recently appeared on the fantastic music show in Britain, Live with Jools Holland.

Golden is probably most recognized for his contribution to the last episode of The OC with his wonderful song, On a Saturday. He, also, has contributed vocals and guitar work to projects by both Michael Stipe and Chris Martin. His vocals have been compared to that of Art Garfunkel and have the eeriness and honesty that Elliott Smith brought to his songs. Many of the songs are just acoustic guitar and vocals.

Revenge Songs was recorded mostly out of the studio at Golden's home in Portland, OR and various other locations. All of the background sounds were left in the final product such as sirens in the background of the song Zero Integrity.

The thing I love most about Golden are his methods of promotion. He'll happily play music in fan's living room and put the performances out on YouTube for everyone to share. Through his music and his methods, you truely realize that all he really wants to do is play his music and have it be heard, even if it is only for one person. There is no glitz or glamour to Mr. Golden, just a man and his guitar, which in the current music landscape is getting harder and harder to find.

Americans should buy/pre-order Revenge Songs - it is a complete album rather than a bunch of songs thrown together and packaged. It's well worth your hard-earned money. It will definitely be put on repeat.

Jacob Golden has three shows confirmed at South by Southwest and, if I am lucky enough to get in, I will finally get to catch him live, especially that showcase with Jim James. The dates are listed below.
