Icy Demons : Miami Ice
Who's in the lead to capture that beautiful Panda Bear hat we're giving away you ask? Well, I'm not saying Hammerjack is in the lead, but he is. BTW, Jonas, we like your D'Urbervilles pick too.
Anyway, come on folks, Vampire Weekend? Think outside the box a little. We've been touting Bon Iver since early June of 2007...way before Stereogum and the others jumped on...we knoooow he's great. Suprise me here! No, seriously, outside of Vampire Weekend (and I'm not clowning them, I love 'em - that's just no work though), there are some good picks going on in there. Keep it up. The winner will be announced Monday, February 11th. Now you know were you stand...feel free to change your pick.

On to Hammerjack's pick...I had heard of Chicago-based project Icy Demons, but I was unaware of their 2007 Japan-only release Miami Ice. Apparently, it will finally be released in the U.S. this coming April Fools Day. I have since tracked down the import version, and I'm hooked. Icy Demons is a side project for members of bands like Man Man, Bablicon, Need New Body, Coyote, Herculaneum and more. The members use the aliases Blue Hawaii, Tombstone G, Pow Pow (of Man Man), Rick Daggers, Graveyard P, Moylando Calrissian, Ali Hawkbar, Young Master Schneider, Ta-Freek-Ya, The Diminisher, Da Minister, Thousand Rabbits Running and Il Cativo. Man, all of those make me jealous. The group's primaries and founders, though, are Blue Hawaii, aka Bablicon's Griffin Rodriguez and Pow Pow aka Man Man/Need New Body's Christopher Powell.
The group has released three albums, Fight Back! on the Elephant 6-associated label Cloud Recordings. Tears of a Clone on the Eastern Developments Music, and in 2007 Miami Ice on Easel (source).
The sound is an experimental fusion of avant-garde/electronic/prog-rock/jazz/kraut and psych. The title track of Miami Ice is one of the most accessible, focused and fun...

3 Talk back to yo' mama!:
Please don't tease me. Pretty pretty please. I'm thinkin of some back-ups but man, winning a "Panda Bear" hat by referencing "Icy Demons" would be like a musical oatmeal creampie of my famished soul.
if you dig icy demons...definitely make an effort to grab the Bablicon records...at least one of which is out-of-print.
Definitely in the same vein, albeit operating under a more avant-jazz/psychedelia aesthetic than Icy Demons. Less structured, but not as much so as say...Need New Body. Excellent, largely unheard stuff.
All were issued on Misra records.
who did the album cover artwork?
