Carol Bui : Live on MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio, Left Of Center, Channel 26

I was telling Jeff the other day, that we really needed to get more female-fronted acts in to record MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio/91.7 WEEM sessions. We'd had a couple cancellations/re-schedules with female artists and I was feeling a little cursed. Carol Bui stepped up though and saved me from my whining. I caught up with her and her band after a looooong and fun night, and it took us a few takes to lock in, but once she did, we all got to experience some excellent female-led punk-infused rock.

Everyone Wore White was released this past October 2nd on 54o40' or Fight! Records. It was recorded at Inner Ear Studios, birthplace of the classic Fugazi, Minor Threat and Bad Brains albums.

Tune in to My Old Kentucky Blog Radio on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Left Of Center, Channel 26 every Tuesday at 12pm EST and 12am EST to hear more.

Is your band, or a band you rep or manage, interested in recording a session for MOKB's weekly show on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Left Of Center? If so, email Jeff and/or Dodge and let us know.

Bon Iver Signs To Jagjaguwar

MOKB was one of the sites that introduced you to Bon Iver in June and has been pushing him at you ever since. I'm so happy many have listened. Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver, following his new management partnership with Billions, has now signed to Jagjaguwar for the official release of his debut For Emma, Forever Ago early next year!

I couldn't be happier about this signing. Jagjaguwar is an imprint of the Bloomington, Indiana-based Secretly Canadian, so Justin will surely be touring this way in support of the album's release!

If you've yet to hear it, stream it at his VIRB site.

Bon Iver - Skinny Love (highest rec!)

Voodoo Music Festival : Recap Two

As I said previous, we started each day of the Voodoo Music Festival in the French Quarter and the surrounding areas. With all the time at the festival, we never had entire days to wonder around - we had to kinda jam it all in. I'm sure there are hundreds of places we could have gone, but that's what return trips will be for.

The great thing about this city, and this being my first time there and all, is that it was obvious there was more than one could explore in even a couple weeks. Beyond the Quarter, there were amazing places to eat, see music, relax and just enjoy on every corner it seemed. I'll definitely be heading back in the near future. Every local made sure to tell me that while they were happy that Voodoo had come back and was growing, there was no substitute for the Jazz Fest.

A city rich with history.

Voodoo Music Festival : Recap One

I have a lot I want to cover, so I think I'll break it up into a few posts.

I enjoyed the Voodoo Music Festival as much as any, but I was equally as interested to spend some time with the city. We started each day in the French Quarter and the surrounding areas. We wondered around, debated which house belonged to Brangelina (we think we worked it out), talk to lots of locals - some "normal", some not-so-much - all treated us fantastically well.

I ate one too many beignets. I had some fantastic shrimp ettoufee on two separate occasions, drank a Hurricane, a cafe au lait and an Abita Beer or ten. I ate a huge cheeseburger at Port Of Call, my first piece of red meat in over eight months. I have Justin Drunkard to thank for that, and I'm not disappointed about it one bit.

The festival itself wasn't over-crowded. The security was really friendly and let some rules bend at times without being careless. The food was tasty, and not overly-pricey. Most all of the bands and artists were available for a quick interview or photo op. Make sure to check GvB's upcoming polaroids because we got some great ones.

My favorite afterparty show all weekend was easily Galactic with Chali 2na and Boots Riley.

I've got to thank Craig from Ice Cream Man and Matt Picasso for all their photo-taking advice. My "big camera" skills started weakly, but I was pretty happy by the end of the fest with all I'd learned.

Here is a first pass at the weekend. We'll focus on the music this time and then the city and then a little bit of all it in an upcoming post or two...

A set I was actually pretty giddy for

Dodge taking polaroid for GvB: "Ben I need to get up kinda close"
Ben: "Not that close! No one needs to see my fillings."

MJ: "Damn, Common is smooooooth"

Chris Farley jams with Fall Out Boy...oh wait...

I actually almost walked directly into Ashlee Simpson before MJ told me it was Ashlee Simpson

Ghostland Observatory

Ghostland Observatory

I couldn't get enough JJ Grey & Mofro

More JJ Grey & MOFRO

Toots & The Maytals had the crowd going nuts!

One of the better Spoon sets I've seen

This dude...wait, I mean Sinead still has a great voice

But kind of a boring set. She did let me take her polaroid though.

RATM was intense!

Rage Against The Machine

Oddly, a lot of talk about Paolo getting pudgy

Margot Goes Major

I was out of town and sadly didn't get to throw this out there first, but regardless, the news is great. Indianapolis-based band Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos signed with Sony's Epic label last week. The band returned from Chicago, after recording three songs with Modest Mouse/Iron & Wine producer Brian Deck, and signed the paperwork.

The band was very excited upon their return from Chicago and working with Deck. They're hitting the road again this December for a small tour and will continue working on the new record, Animal, anticipating a Spring/Summer 2008 release date.

Get all your Margot mp3s now because Sony don't give sh!t away for free.

Voodoo Music Festival

Thanks to the Louisiana Office of Tourism, I'm heading down to cover the Voodoo Music Fest today.

Voodoo will have three distinct stages, Le Ritual, LE Flambeau and Le Carnival. Le Ritual will feature your standard indie fest-type bands, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, M.I.A., Kings Of Leon, Spoon but also with more mainstream MTVers mixed in like Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Heroes.

Le Flambeau will be a more regionally-centric lineup - Dr. John, JJ Grey & MOFRO, Zap Mama, Toot and the Maytals, etc.

Le Carnival will be just that - Ghostland Observatory, Ska Cubano and all sorts of other exciting craziness. You can view the full lineup here.

This will be my first time in NOLA, so I'm pretty excited to experience as much as I can. I'll be joined by some of your and my favorite bloggers who have a little more experience in the city, so Im hoping they can show me the ins and outs.

Spoon - The Underdog
Galactic ft. Lyrics Born - I Got It (What You Need)

How about you guys? Where are the must-visit places?

Outside of Le Ritual, who are the must-see bands?

The Weakerthans : Reunion Tour

I've been listening to The Weakerthan's Reunion Tour off and on for a few weeks now, and I gotta tell you, this record just makes me feel good and relaxed. Lyrically the narratives are not all full of feelings of warmth - more melancholy, yearning and disorientation really. We can all relate at times, so maybe that's what I like. Throughout the tunes though, there is a steady uplifting feeling. It's got the feel of Fall record - a season I love.

Before Reunion Tour it had been quite a while since I'd thought of or listened to The Weakerthans. Their previous album, Reconstruction Site, came out over four years ago - an eternity in this high-speed internet come-and-gone era. This time around, lead singer John K. Samson's narritives cover all things Canadian...everything from the NHL to curling to Bigfoot. Virtute the cat even makes a return this album. Reunion Tour came out last month on Anti-/Epitaph and is well worth the listen.

The Weakerthans - Night Windows

Pop Dee-Lite : Anna Ternheim : Anna Ternheim EP

Anna Ternheim is sad. But the way she communicates that sadness with such simple, poetic beauty on her self-titled EP makes me happy. In truth, I didn't have any expectations when I popped her EP into my car's CD player one evening. I knew nothing about her. One listen and I wanted more - a full-length album to be exact. I'll have to wait until March for that.

In the meantime, let's get to know Anna Ternheim. She's a 28-year-old who has been wowing fans and critics in her native Sweden for three years - releasing two albums and winning three Swedish Grammys. You can get a taste of what our Swedish friends have been keeping as their deliciously sad little secret on her EP, out Oct. 30 on Decca. This very pretty pity party serves as her U.S. debut and features a mash-up of songs from various albums and EPs she released overseas. It gives us a chance to revel in her mournful voice, which resembles Natalie Merchant, and her powerful lyrics, all paired perfectly with a fairly sparse acoustic arrangement. Her reserved take on David Bowie's China Girl is an extra perk. Fans of Imogen Heap and Sia should add this EP to their collection and be first in line to get her new album next spring. Look for her to announce a tour soon.

MOKB Covers Project : When Doves Cry

I was seven years old in 1984 and my older brother, Chris, played Prince's Purple Rain album to death. It was still all vinyl in our house at that time and mixed in between the Black Sabbath, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Judas Priest and Bruce Springsteen, the Purple Rain soundtrack was in heavy rotation.

This was the last song Prince wrote and recorded for the album and movie.
