Iran So Far Away

I've been in Michigan this weekend. We stayed in last night to watch the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Andy Samberg's Iran So Far Away was a highlight. Fred Armisen played Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Samberg was joined by douchey-two-shoes Adam Levine of Maroon 5 on vocals...

Other clips...

Kanye West on 106 & Park addresses his recent award show outbursts.

LaBron James is gonna bang Vanessa Hudgens in High School Musical 3.

What were your thoughts on this season's premiere?

Monolith Festival : Photo Recap : Kid Sister & Flosstradamus

Two of MOKB's best friends and now occasional correspondents, Naomi and Ryan, went out to the Monolith Festival and sent back loads photos to show you how it all looked and felt. I was at ACL Fest, so it was great to see the highlights from this hopefully soon-to-be recurring festival.

You can view their first batch here. Ryan shot well over a thousand photos, and he's finally filtered through them all. We'll give you some of the highlights over the next week...

Mason Proper covers Pink Floyd

It's a Pink Floyd kinda week around here. If you missed it, check out Luft's Upon Further Review : Pink Floyd : The Piper at the Gates of Dawn post.

The band says, "We once overheard somebody say, 'no band could ever cover Bike by Pink Floyd'. Always seeking to prove that total strangers talking loudly at other tables in New York restaurants are making incorrect statements, we accepted the challenge."

Tunng : Good Arrows

I got into Tunng some time near the middle of last year, so I have been anticipating their latest release, Good Arrows, since I heard they were working on new material. The nice thing was, due to the stretch between UK and US releases, I had a lot of material to hold me over until this week. While US folk moves more towards the earthly, experimental and "freakier" factions, Tunng pushes further and further down the technological path. Tunng makes some of the finest electro-folk out there - using traditional and very non-traditional instruments and sound devices. The band has permanently grown in size as well, and the cohesion is apparent.

"Taking influences from Icelandic prog rock, choral music and film soundtracks, Good Arrows marks a significant development for Tunng."

Their third album, Good Arrows, has been released by Thrill Jockey and you can buy it here. Tunng's MySpace.

Tunng - Bullets (highly rec'd!)
Tunng - Bricks

Tunng : Bullets (Video)

Bonus Tunng MP3s:

Tunng - Woodcat
Tunng - Tale From Black
Tunng - Pool Beneath The Pond

See Tunng perform Bullets live and some more (unrelated) new videos worth checking out after the jump...

Kanye West : The Good Life

Kneejerk RXN : Komputer : Synthetik

I’m a hypocrite. I talk about how musicians should perform like their lives depend upon it, but one of my favorite bands of all-time consists of four German guys who wear ties with short-sleeved shirts, act like robots and seemingly could give a rat’s ass whether the audience even showed up.

Now comes Synthetik, the new release from Komputer, a London-based duo that theoretically must be twice as good as Kraftwerk simply because there are half as many members. Brian Eno and Kraftwerk are clearly the touchstones here, as mechanical beats and vintage synthesizer sounds bubble beneath lyrics that alternately praise and bemoan technological advancements. And don’t miss Blackie, quite possibly the best song ever recorded about a lost cat. Highly recommended for your morning commute, or if you’re like me and find dehumanization somewhat comforting.

Cryptacize : New Asthmatic Kitty Artist

Michael Carreira, Nedelle Torrisi and Chris Cohen (of The Curtains and formerly of Deerhof) make up the band Cryptacize, the newest signees to Asthmatic Kitty Records. Torrisi and Cohen sought out Carreira after seeing a YouTube of just his hands banging on a cowbell. They convinced him to join their project and the band was born. What little I've heard is as sweet as the sugar factory the band used to live by. The band says the constant dizziness and the smell of burning sugar became a permanent part of their psyches, and their #1 influence. You can read more about that here along with the story behind the band's not-so-great name.

Cryptacize - We'll Never Dream Again
Cryptacize - Cosmic Sing-A-Long

Via Audio : Live on MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio, Left Of Center, Channel 26

Via Audio is on a roll and has some heavy hitters in their corner. Their album was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon. Chris Walla, of Death Cab For Cutie, found their MySpace randomly and continues to champion the band to all who will listen. Spin featured them as a band of the day, and Stereogum jumped on their video of Presents last week. They are wrapping up their tour and a set at The Monolith Festival, so on their way home to Brooklyn they stopped in to record MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio/91.7 WEEM session with us. It wasn't a short affair. We recorded a lot of songs and tweaked and tweaked, but I love how it all turned out. Check out their MySpace and their new label SideCho.

Tune in to My Old Kentucky Blog Radio on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Left Of Center, Channel 26 every Tuesday at 12pm EST and 12am EST to hear more.

Is your band, or a band you rep or manage, interested in recording a session for MOKB's weekly show on SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Left Of Center? If so, email Jeff and/or Dodge and let us know.

Pop Dee-Lite : Lucky Soul : The Great Unwanted

Lucky Soul

It’s one of the last perfectly sunny and warm days of the year today in Minnesota, the perfect backdrop for the bright and shiny retro pop of England’s Lucky Soul. The six-piece released The Great Unwanted, a record that takes its cues from Motown-era favorites like The Ronnettes and The Supremes, on Ruffa Lane Records earlier this year. It's a disc full of high-energy ditties that shimmy, shake, ooh and aah all over you thanks to lead singer Ali Howard, who primps and purrs through each song with her Betty Boop-like vocals.

My personal favorite is Baby I’m Broke, a glittery ballad that doesn’t rely as heavily on the retro sound. Then there’s Ain’t Never Been Cool, which sounds like an outtake from the original Grease soundtrack. And for those of you mourning the passing of a summer fling, One Kiss Don’t Make a Summer was written for you. The Great Unwanted may not offer up a “new” sound, but it’s fresh and fun, and your mom might like it too. (Sorry if that just turned off a gaggle of potential new fans, but you’re a big kid now and you don’t have to tell your parents what you’re listening to, right?)

Fans of retro bands like Camera Obscura and The Pipettes who have made waves lately should take note of Lucky Soul. Here’s hoping they launch a tour in the U.S. soon and bring us a touch of their glam. Lucky Soul's MySpace.

Lucky Soul - Add Your Light To Mine, Baby

Upon Further Review : Pink Floyd : The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Hey, Craig Finn, the 80s almost killed me too, but reissues are going to finish the job. Let's face it, reissues are not going away, not as long as people like myself are willing to re-purchase records we already own to get an earful of some half-baked lost recording found in a br
