Voodoo Music Festival

Thanks to the Louisiana Office of Tourism, I'm heading down to cover the Voodoo Music Fest today.Voodoo will have three distinct stages, Le Ritual, LE Flambeau and Le Carnival. Le Ritual will feature your standard indie fest-type bands, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, M.I.A., Kings Of Leon, Spoon but also with more mainstream MTVers mixed in like Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Heroes.
Le Flambeau will be a more regionally-centric lineup - Dr. John, JJ Grey & MOFRO, Zap Mama, Toot and the Maytals, etc.
Le Carnival will be just that - Ghostland Observatory, Ska Cubano and all sorts of other exciting craziness. You can view the full lineup here.
This will be my first time in NOLA, so I'm pretty excited to experience as much as I can. I'll be joined by some of your and my favorite bloggers who have a little more experience in the city, so Im hoping they can show me the ins and outs.
Spoon - The Underdog
Galactic ft. Lyrics Born - I Got It (What You Need)
How about you guys? Where are the must-visit places?
Outside of Le Ritual, who are the must-see bands?

8 Talk back to yo' mama!:
Local up and coming hometown indie rock heros Rotary Downs. They kick off the MAIN stage on saturday. Get their early! That night they are play DBA. If you are looking for a night show with some local party flavor - head there.
Just a fan, Chained to the Chariot is a excellent record!

get a muffaletta sammich at maspero's. mmmm.
i personally like to take the ride on the steamboat natchez. it's a cool tour of the river.
have a great time in NOLA.
Okay, so maybe these are touristy to some, but I suggest you try anyway (all are in the Quarter):
Cafe DuMonde (I probably butchered the spelling)- coffee and beignets, yum
Pat O'Briens - Hurricanes!!
Remoulade - if it's still there (not sure, it's been a couple of years). They have these excellent little crawfish pie things. TASTY.
Brennan's - if you're interested in upscale brunch. Oh dear God, so good.
The Gumbo Shop - there are a lot of great spots to get gumbo, but I liked this one alot.
If you have time, the Cabildo is a neat stop. Just next to St. Louis Cathedral, off of Jackson Square. Neat museum.
Pirates Alley - not necessarily much to look at but there's a teeny little bar/cafe that is right next to the spot where my wife and I exchanged vows a couple of years ago (2nd wedding for each of us so we had fun with it).
If you're not burnt out on the music, great music at One Eyed Jacks and the Maple Leaf. Also, catch the Soul Rebels, Trombone Shorty, and anything Johnny Vidocavich plays.
Great food all around - can't fault a place we ate there. Enjoy coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde.
We caught some local legends at Mid-City Rock and Bowl. Definitely hit there.
Just wander around the French Quarter and the Garden District for a bit. You're not going to take it all in while you're there, so just enjoy what you get.
Do NOT go to remoulade. maybe its different after the hurricane, but i found to to be really average and tourist-y. One-eyed jacks and maple leaf are awesome, as is Tipatina's, which has Galactic playing saturday.
If you want to see a really real bar, possibly the best dive bar known to man, after 3:30 tell your cabby "snake and jakes"
Of course you have to see Preservation Hall, just for historic reasons, but if you get a chance to see Big Sam's Funky Nation, definitely check them out. They are a powerhouse style band with lots of funky bass, jamming guitar and blowing horns.
If you want to see more of that style of band also check out Bonerama. Despite the odd name these guys are very good. Four tromebones and a tuba, along with an electric guitar and drums. They are fun to hear and watch. They do some crazy covers (we know you like covers) of jimmy hendrix and led zeppelin among others. Don't stand to close because they are LOUD! They will definitely blow your hair a la the old stereo commercial with the guy sitting in the chair.
I think both of these bands represent the new groups of big bands with horn sections doing electric classic rock.
Either way looks like you are going to have a GREAT time. I'm flippin' jealous!!
Ftrain
definitely catch Rotary Downs. They are amazing, and based on your music tastes, I think you'd really dig them.
my favorite dining spots for dinner:
upscale:
Irene's Cuisine (539 St. Philip - corner of St. Philip and Chartres)
Mr. B's - 201 Royal
Palace Cafe - 615 Canal
mid-scale/casual:
Baru - Magazine Street uptown (great vibe and great food!)
casual, late night, funky, cheap and good:
Angeli - Decatur near Ursulines
lunch - casual:
Fiorella's - Decatur near Ursulines
Surrey's - Magazine St near Thalia (also amazing for breakfast - great fresh juices)
