Pop Dee-Lite : Anna Ternheim : Anna Ternheim EP

Anna Ternheim is sad. But the way she communicates that sadness with such simple, poetic beauty on her self-titled EP makes me happy. In truth, I didn't have any expectations when I popped her EP into my car's CD player one evening. I knew nothing about her. One listen and I wanted more - a full-length album to be exact. I'll have to wait until March for that.
In the meantime, let's get to know Anna Ternheim. She's a 28-year-old who has been wowing fans and critics in her native Sweden for three years - releasing two albums and winning three Swedish Grammys. You can get a taste of what our Swedish friends have been keeping as their deliciously sad little secret on her EP, out Oct. 30 on Decca. This very pretty pity party serves as her U.S. debut and features a mash-up of songs from various albums and EPs she released overseas. It gives us a chance to revel in her mournful voice, which resembles Natalie Merchant, and her powerful lyrics, all paired perfectly with a fairly sparse acoustic arrangement. Her reserved take on David Bowie's China Girl is an extra perk. Fans of Imogen Heap and Sia should add this EP to their collection and be first in line to get her new album next spring. Look for her to announce a tour soon.
