MOKB Covers Project : Always On My Mind

It's a sappy one, but a classic. Written by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson, and originally recorded and released by Brenda Lee in 1972, Always On My Mind has really been made famous by Willie Nelson, the Pet Shop Boys and Elvis Presley. Willie's version hit number one on the Billboard chart, Pet Shop Boys snuck it into the Top 10 for a short time and Elvis reached number 16 with it on the Hot Country Singles Chart in 1973. The year previous, Brenda Lee could only take it to number 45. Probably the best take on it that really took it out of it's element is the Pet Shop Boys' version.
Apart from a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, Always on My Mind earned numerous other awards, including the 1982 and 1983 Country Music Association's "Song of the Year" honors (to songwriters Christopher, James and Thompson); and the 1982 CMA Single of the Year (to Nelson). Always on My Mind was named Billboard's number one country song for 1982. (Always On My Mind Wiki)
We don't discriminate when it comes to the covers, so you'll have to excuse the American Idol inclusion.
