Songs of Green Pheasant : Gyllyng Street
I've been throwing a lot of new names/contributors at you in the past couple weeks, but I hope you think that's a good thing. Just hoping to give you a variety of styles of both writing and music. I liked being around Greg the minute I met him. We talked about music and life with complete ease and have done so since that first day. Greg is passionate about discovering new music, loves a good live show, and is activly pursuing a career in the business side of music. Send all opportunities his way. Greg will eventually become MOKB's Austin, TX-based correspondent, but until then, we're glad to have him back home again in Indiana. - Dodge

For those of you not familiar, Songs of Green Pheasant is the brainchild of Duncan Sumpner. Sumpner, a former school teacher in the town of Sheffield, England, recorded his first LP in his home using nothing but a four-track. The story goes, Sumpner sent a ten-song demo to FatCat Records (Animal Collective, Múm, Sigur Rós) and they immediately fell in love with it. It took two years for FatCat to finally find him because of problems with his email address. When they did find him, they requested that they put his demo out as his self-titled debut album. It was well-received, even earning a 7.3 from Pitchfork. He subsequently released, to equal acclaim, Aerial Days, last year.
This brings us to his third and latest album, Gyllyng Street. Gyllyng Street is the perfect album to have playing in your car while you lay on the hood, looking up at the stars, reflecting on life. The album is a strong move forward from his self-titled debut, moving from a folk sound to evoke more of an early 90s shoegaze feel. Musically and thematically, Gyllyng Street is the most focused record by Sumpner to date. Throughout the album, each track moves to the next with ease, creating a beautiful soundscape to lose one’s self in. The name Gyllyng Street comes from the street that Sumpner lived on during his time as an art student and the songs are a reflection of the people that made up that time in his life. According to Sumpner himself, the record communicates "the disintegration of youth, faith and the sense of 'where you come from' – the young, feverish, over-zealous ideas on art and politics. The many I knew at that time - whether tramps or sons of millionaires - make up the sense of the record and the general quiet drift of our lives...."
The album is due out September 18th in the US and Canada, August 20th everywhere else. Songs Of Green Pheasant's MySpace.

1 Talk back to yo' mama!:
I like the Boat song. Sounds almost like Band of Horses in a way.
