Four For The Long Weekend...
I'm about outta here for the holiday weekend and don't know if I'll be near any computers until Tuesday, but I wanted to share some thoughts on a few of the more impressive tracks making their way around the blogosphere in the last week or two...

Band of Horses took the blogs by storm last year. Everything All The Time was on loads of Year-End Best Of's lists. Rightfully so, in my opinion, I loved it. I decided to forego a Best of Indie Rock last year...opting for Best EPs and Hip-Hop, but had I done one, it would have been in the Top 10. Then there was the predictable indie blog hangover. Attacks on the songwriting and lyrics (sure, probably their weak point) and a general malaise towards their live show at festivals (the do excel in the smaller, smokey bar atmosphere). Well, after hearing Is There A Ghost, my excitement for their return is definitely through the roof.

Chromatics recently covered Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill, and this is definitely one of those taking-something-good-and-making-it-great covers that happens on the rarest of occasions.

Laurie Anderson rightfully should be considered a crazy bohemian genius. I mean maybe she is in most circles. Nonesuch Records recently released the 25th anniversary reissue (with one bonus track (Walk the Dog) and the video of O Superman) of her groundbreaking album Big Science. Dan The Automater recently remixed her song From The Air...

MOKB talked about Ham1's debut album a couple years ago, so we'd almost forgetten about them! We dug them then, and we still do now! Jim Willingham and his newly solidified lineup of Eric Harris of the Olivia Tremor Control on drums, Liz Durrett, Kris Barratt of the Capes, and Pete Erchick, also of Olivia Tremor Control have been picked up by Orange Twin Records and will release The Captain's Table on November 6th, 2007.

2 Talk back to yo' mama!:
The Chromatic's version of "Running Up That Hill Is Good", but have you heard the version by Placebo?
If you're looking for a cover that improves upon the original, well, that's it IMHO.
wow, i don't know who is saying these things about band of horses (weak songwriting, bad live shows), but i couldn't disagree more...when i saw them at their cd release show in seattle it was a breath of fresh air. i hadn't seen solid, huge rock music payed to well and with so much skill in a long, long time.
i can't wait for the new album!
