Ben Lee Covers Against Me!'s Entire Album
Rachel shared this with us this weekend and we couldn't be happier. I am interested in the direction Against Me! will take after signing a major label contract, but that doesn't change the fact their album New Wave is one of this year's best. Ben Lee feels the same way...
A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the new "Against Me!" album "New Wave". I didnt really know too much about this band but had been reading lots of good things about it, and my friend Tegan sings on it. I like to keep myself up to date with whats going on musically in the world, so I checked it out. I fell in love with the album. Really. Like, couldn't stop listening to it. As heavy and gnarly as it sounds at times, it is unmistakably a pop masterpiece. Listening to it on the way to Australia, I wondered to myself how these songs would sound acoustically.A couple of days later I was on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne and had the thought "I'd love to cover this album." The whole thing. Beginning to end. So I did.
Anyway, here are the results. If you already know the original album, I hope these recordings shed a different light on it. If you don't know "Against Me!" and like what you hear, go check them out.
Nic Johns is the unspoken hero of this tale. He recorded, produced and mixed it and basically made my dream a reality. Hats off to him.

Excellent stuff Dodge. Ben Lee has been a fave of mine over ten years now, plus the against Me record is phenomenal.
Great post, this cover album is fantastic! It's a complete reinterpretation that turns a punk/pop album into a soothing acoustic one, and it translates really well. Thanks for making this available!

Ben Lee makes me sick. I can't believe anyone would stoop this low. Covering a new album says to me "this album is good but i think i can do it better...coz i'm ben lee!"

hey thanks for playing some Ben covering AM! tracks on LOC this morning...but if you ever play Averil Lavigne covering Coldplay again, I will cover you in vomit. Copious amounts of vomit. Both should be taken to a field and shot.
Hey! I said I hated Avril! Old Coldplay isn't too shameful. "The Scientist" is a good song.
I hate to be one of those guys, but I really prefer Against Me!'s first album to their follow-up albums, mostly because it has a lot more acoustic guitar than the others.

Terrible Cover. He take off the magic of the real album. I don't love the cover. Really Not. Hey! Ben. Cover Britney Spears or an other looser pop musician. If you spend more time on your albums, maybe it might be good.
