MOKB Covers Project IV - Ring Of Fire

Johnny Cash enjoyed a beautiful and well-deserved resurgence after the success of the Joaquin Phoenix/Reese Witherspoon hit, Walk The Line. Ring Of Fire was written by June Carter-Cash and Merle Kilgore in 1962. Basically the song is about Carter's tumultous relationship with Johnny and his drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. June's uncle was a poet who wrote the line "love is like a burning ring of fire" thus originating the basis for the song. The song was was recorded on March 25, 1963 and was Johnny's largest commercial success, staying at number one on the charts for seven weeks.
The song was originally recorded by June's sister, Anita Carter, on her album Ring Of Fire (1962) as "(Love's) Ring of Fire". Anita's version didn't include the mexican horns, which Cash claims he heard with the song in a dream. Cash waited to see if it was a hit for Anita, but when it wasn't he recorded it his way.
A large list of cover versions can be found at the song's Wiki, and if you have any that I haven't listed, please send them in and I'll post them up.

17 Talk back to yo' mama!:
Please fix the Social D link...purty please with sugar on top.
Wow! That's comprehensive. You did miss one that I know of -- Billy Bob Thornton with Earl Scruggs. Billy Bob's vocal is...passable, but Earl chunks the banjer like he was straight outta Compton. I found it on an Oxford American sampler a few years back. Don't know how easy it might be to acquire nowadays. Great compilation of Rings!
Great roll, "Wind," "Fire," "Horses." Just thought I'd mention Blondie's "Ring of Fire" version from the "Roadie" soundtrack.
Here's another "Ring," Stan Ridgeway live, available at his site.
My favourite song at kareoke. Superb...
I think the Ray Charles version is my favorite... I love what he does with it.
Ed Kuepper has a great version as well.
the 'Johnny Cash vs Clipse" link gives me a 404. And I really wanna hear it...
thanks!
Mutha effers!...they shut down my account. I think I stressed their servers too far or someone complained.
I'll have to re-upload everything.
sonofabeeeeyatch.
There's also a cover by Grace Jones I don't see on your list...
PLEASE fix the Clipse link... I've been looking for that mash up for a while now.
Earl Scruggs does one with Billy Bob Thorton on his album "Earl Scruggs and His Friends." It's not half bad.
and where's grace jones' version?
Love Lucero's version. Thanks!
There's also a terrific Jason & the Scorchers version from the mid-80s I didn't see on your list. Very good and worth it if you can find it.
PLEASE reupload. That parody is brilliant!
That one guy is right. The version from the "Scruggs and Friends" album, done with Billy Bob Thorton, is a fun one!
And get that Junior Brown link back up!!
