!!! (chk chk chk) - Myth Takes

Happy New Year's Eve! Continuing to preview releases coming out in the first quarter of 2007, !!! (chk chk chk) is putting out their next record, Myth Takes, this coming March 4th on Warp Records. Full of big basslines and a funk feel, it has more than a few tracks that will have you shaking your ass.

Warp Records says the album "combines an enhanced focus on incredible song writing with all the intricacy, freedom and shear dance floor swagger that made Louden Up Now such a delight". I say, "Dance Muthafucka, Dance!"

3. Must Be The Moon
4. A New Name

The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes

I talked about Merge, but Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar arguably had the best catalog of releases in 2006 as well. In February, The Besnard Lakes will release The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse on Jagjaguar. The Besnard Lakes are another large band out of Montreal. The band centers around husband and wife, Jace Lasek and Olga Gorea and the record was recorded at Lasek's own Breakglass Studios, which is the studio of choice for bands like Wolf Parade, Islands and Sunset Rubdown. They'll draw numerous comparisons to the harmonious psych-rock bands of the 60's and 70's (Beach Boys/Mamas & The Papas) as well as contemporaries like Brothers & Sisters and Broken Social Scene. Hear their song, Disaster, at The Besnard Lakes' MySpace

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City

I'm looking forward to Bloc Party's sophomore album, A Weekend In The City, due out early February, so I was listening to these today to tide me over. This demo apparently doesn't have the same "energy and development" that the album version does, but it will be interesting to hear the difference once the album is out. I know the album has hit the torrents, but I haven't downloaded it. I'll buy it, or hope someone sends it to me (hint hint). I did go ahead and grab The Prayer so I could get a taste of the album's sound though.

There is sure to be backlash on this album, but I think it will probably find it's way onto a lot of blogger year-end lists in 2007. 2007 is shaping up to have some great releases, so the blogosphere may be jumping around so much that no album really has time to bombard you readers and listeners so much that you wanna spit on it...well, other than Neon Bible.

Bloc Party - The Prayer
Bloc Party - Hunting For Witches (Demo)

Weekend In The City Tracklisting:

1. Song For Clay (Disappear Here)
2. Hunting For Witches
3. Waiting For The 7.18
4. Prayer
5. Uniform
6. On
7. Where Is Home?
8. Kreuzberg
9. I Still Remember
10. Sunday
11. Srxt

Amadou & Mariam : Dimanche à Bamako

Amadou & Mariam : Dimanche à Bamako

One of the more underrated albums of 2006 2005 (no wonder I didn't hear much about it in 2006! ah well, it's still worth checking out if you missed it.), at least mostly ignored on the indie music blogs, was Amadou & Mariam's Dimanche à Bamako. Konono No.1's Congotronics did well though, so it's sort of a head-scratcher that it didn't cause more waves on the internerd. It's "world music" so maybe it's expected, so if you missed out on this one, make sure you check it out now. World & Latin music star Manu Chao plays a part on every song, whether it's vocals, guitar or programming, he's there. That alone makes it worthy as well.

Both Amadou and Mariam are blind, they met in their native country's, Mali, Institute for the Young Blind and married in 1980. The duo make a type of music described as "Afro-Blues". They combine traditional Mali sound with modern sounds and musical styles from many other countries around the world. Chao's influence is evident in this area. They mis their sound with just about everything you can think of.

They had a good 2005 year with the U.S. release of this album and then recording the hit theme for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Dimanche à Bamako was actually released way back in 2004, but this last year was it's U.S. release.

Amadou & Mariam - Sénégal Fast Food (highly rec'd!)

The Laylights

The Laylights

Denver, Colorado band, The Laylights have a U2/Killers crossed with Interpol (and all bands associated/knock-offs - like the Editors) kind of feel to them. Athemic rock that is lush and full, but with a little edge or moodiness. They probably sound like too many other bands, at this point, to make a big splash, but they have a great mastery of the sound and are more than worth checking out. They played some smaller festivals this year, like Midwest Music Summit and the Southpark Music Festival, and were a big hit at both. Devner's scene seems to be producing a lot of talent in recent years. The Laylights' MySpace.

Busts & Break-ups Of 2006

Well, no other year seemed to focus more on the build up and breakdowns of "blog bands" and any other little thing written about on music blogs. Why don't we run down some of the interesting, funny and polarizing topics and bands that got lots of love, but then didn't quite live up to, in some writer's, critic's and blogger's minds, the hype. Some of MOKB's favorite bloggers have dropped us a line to talk a little bit, but we'd also love if you'd tell us some of the things you felt didn't quite reach iconic status as they were billed to.

Many felt that if it looked like shit, it was shit

What many of you knew would be one of the biggest busts of 2006 turned out to be, at least in this stage of it's life. The Microsoft Zune was met with much rage when posted about on MOKB and other notable blogs. iPod enthusiasts were quick to not only dismiss the Zune, but kill the families of all those associated with it. Sluggish sales after week one have led to the belief that this version of Microsoft's "serious" attempt to enter the mp3 player market is not long for this world. Brown was a bold and interesting choice, but only added to the ammunition that this player was a piece of...

Snakes On A Mutherfuckin' PlaneSnakes On A Plane built a huge marketing buzz on the internet through blogs, but the movie only opened to $15.2 million and quickly found it's way out of theatres. It will probably see good rentals as a result of the buzz, but my guess is, Hollywood won't be as apt to use blogs to build movie buzz in 2007.

Cobra Starship - Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)

Birdmonster, while still loved here at MOKB, has receieved some serious blacklash towards the latter half of 2006. The band's live show is still outstanding, but they will want to spend some more time on production for their next album.

Birdmonster - All The Holes In The Walls

Cold War Kids and SOUND Team were also very polarizing "blog bands". MOKB saw Cold War Kids live a few times this year and I will say that their live show improved quite a bit over the course of the year. Their full-length had some gems on it that were previously included on their earlier EPs. None of the new songs had as much "umph". Some bloggers thought the CWK band members were "dicks". I have no first hand knowledge of this though. Anyone?

SOUND Team never really piqued my interest beyond SXSW. Bill Baird is still incredibly cool, creative and interesting, but when joining with the rest of his bandmates, I start to lose interest.

Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry
SOUND Team - Your Eyes Are Liars

Even the untouchable Tapes N Tapes saw some backlash this year. I mean, come on, these guys were the most talked about band there for like a three month period leading up to SXSW, so it's only natural that some people got sick of them. MOKB is not among those folks.

Tapes N Tapes - Insistor

Gnarls Barkley hype built to unprecedented levels, and Cee-Lo & Dangermouse actually somewhat delivered. Crazy is great no matter how overplayed, and is definitely the most covered song of 2006. Great live performances and Cee-Lo Green is about as likable a guy as you can find, but nearing the end of 2006, many bloggers and fans have either grown weary or just simply chose to distance themselves from Gnarls in thesecond half of '06.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

In the wake of the Arctic Monkeys, everyone started trying to hype the Test Icicles are the next big thing. Which was ridiculous considering they were less talented than even their name would suggest. Plus, their lead singer might have been the only man on earth that could make Kele from Bloc Party look like Tupac. When they broke up they might have left 14 fans in their wake, 12 of them bloggers - Jeff from the Passion of the Weiss

Test Icicles - Circle, Triangle, Square

Although it wasn't a complete bust, I think of the Raconteurs. The album was easily one of the most anticipated albums of all year as far as the blogosphere was concerned and when Steady As She Goes came out (Jan. 30th) it was on the top post on every blog I visited. By the time the album came out though no one really cared, and good live shows turned out to be the only redeeming factor of the project. - Taylor, Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good

The Raconteurs - Blue Veins

What about Chinese Democracy? I haven't given a fuck about West Lafayette's native son since I was about 12, but apparently this was SUPPOSED to be the year the braided one and his revolving band of people not named Slash released this thing.

Oh shit, my bad... Chinese Democracy WAS released this year... by NYC punk outfit Kitty and the Kowalskis. I guess we can all quit holding our breath now. - MOKB friend and hopefully soon-to-be contributor, B.Chaps

Guns N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle

EZArchive, file host du jour, brought bloggers to their knees with its "upgrade": a transfer of old files (which would have required new URLs within 30 days) and all sorts of restrictions previously unseen in its heyday ("Bandwidth? What the hell is bandwidth?"). Panic ensued.

(For the record, mp3 blog readers were bound to be screwed, too, with downloads at an oh-so crappy 32 kbps.)

So, like scorned lovers, bloggers packed up and left, leaving a wasteland of broken links behind. Oh, EZArchive. We really thought you were The One. - Kevin, So Much Silence

The biggest bust of 2006 was the failure of blogs to unite as one force and take down the neolithic infrastructure of the music industry. To take it down to the lake, depants it, and force it to sit in the cold, cold water of critical democratization. - Eric, Marathonpacks

R.I.P.'s of 2006:

Few bands that disbanded in 2006 caused MOKB a lot of tears, but a couple did. MOKB was more than sad at the demise of Bravo Silva.

Bravo Silva - I Can't Say Goodbye

I think I will miss Grandaddy the most of the bands that called it quits in 2006. Jason Lytle and company were, at one time, "the hot shit" as he put it. Around the time The Sophtware Slump was reaching its peak. However, touring was not something they enjoyed, I talked to Jason in a phone interview once and he said he would love to keep writing and recording music, but touring sucked.

Since Jason was doing most of the work anyway, he did a string of solo dates to support Just Like the Fambly Cat. I was able to catch the first of these, which was amazing here in town. The dude was soooo nervous though, you could tell he really would rather be skateboarding or tipping one back. I guess hes got lots of time for that now as the rumor is that he is kicking it low key in Montana. Heres hoping its not the last we see or hear of Jason. - Joe Long, Each Note Secure

Grandaddy - The Crystal Lake

Giant DragThis break-up was a bowl full of awesome for me, personally, this year: Micah Calabrese’s departure from Giant Drag. I was the first to speculate about the split on my blog and then got Annie Hardy to confirm it, first hand (via e-mail). Then I kinda, mighta, sorta, accidently let the news slip to Stereogum, Dodge here, and Pitchfork (thanks MTV News!). Needless to say, Annie was pissed and although I wouldn’t call her follow-up e-mail to me "mean" – she definitely wasn’t happy. I tried to assure her it wasn’t malicious and I was still a Giant Drag fan but she never responded. Rock stars, what can you do?

Giant Drag - God Only Knows (Beach Boys Cover)

Anyway, the whole situation was kind of a big deal for me – especially to have been the one to break the news – since I’m pretty much a nobody in the music blog scene right now (I drank with Birdmonster once, yeah!). Oh yeah, before I forget: Annie also wants you all to know Giant Drag songs are in standard E tuning, not drop D, despite what anyone tells you. - Chris Walker, Chris Walker Versus

Other bands, according to Wiki, that saw their demise in 2006:

22-20s
Arab Strap
Dead Moon
Death From Above 1979
Out Hud
Rainer Maria
Sleater-Kinney
Test Icicles
The Like Young

Le Tigre, Garbage and Weezer are also on "hiatus".

Group Sounds broke up and some members reformed Generals & Majors.

Generals & Majors - Mother (Live Danzig Cover)

The Broken West - I Can't Go On, I'll Go On

I have enjoyed just about every Merge Records release during the last year and we all know 2007 is going to be a great year for them with the release of the Arcade Fire's Neon Bible.

The Broken West

The Broken West : I Can't Go On, I'll Go OnOne of the first Merge releases of 2007, Jan. 23rd, will be the debut from The Broken West. I had to check these guys out after reading that they make "enthusiastic, jangly, upbeat synth-guitar pop that brings to mind the hooks of contemporary artists like Spoon and Teenage Fanclub..." The PR kids also compare The Broken West to Nick Lowe, Big Star and The Byrds.

The Broken West are an L.A. band that formed in 2002 and originally called themselves The Brokedown. After concerns from a Chicago band of the same name, they changed their name. This upcoming release follows their EP The Dutchman’s Gold.

Funky Christmas

Merry Christmas to all my protestant readers! I hope no matter what you consider yourself, you are enjoying time with family and friends this season!

First night home with Lucy was pretty brutal, but last night was easy-peasy, so hopefully we've turned the corner.

Peace the spork out:

James Brown : Funky ChristmasTo the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. The Godfather and I have some seriously good memories together. Well, he doesn't know about them, but I remember them all. I saw Brown live here in Indianapolis a few years back and he still had the funk, the soul and the rhythm. It was a spectacle to say the least. The Godfather may be responsible for bringing MJ and I together so many years ago...at least laying the groundwork. Thanks for a wonderful life and innumerable contributions to the music community Mr. Brown.

Lucy Noel

Wow, she's finally here! No, I didn't borrow a baby and call her my own, but that was a good one - this is my own little girl!

It was amazing, terrifing and the most incredible moment of my life. MJ is a champ man, I mean an absolute all-star. I couldn't even fathom it. Little Lucy Noel was screaming her head off before she was completely out even and I didn't pass out, so both those facts were amazing. She hollered and yelled for her first four hours, but has been an absolute gem since. I have changed approximately 12 dirty diapers so far. Yeah, it's not as bad as they say, but it ain't glamorous either! She's a good eater, but a better pooper. So far she looks more like Rocky or Popeye than MJ or I, but she's beautiful nonetheless. Nobody in my family really thinks it's funny that I think she looks like Rocky or Popeye, so we'll just keep that between us. Mama requested that the pics she was in don't make MOKB - no woman feels too sexy after giving birth I guess ;)

O'Death - Only Daughter
Peter, Bjorn & John - Object Of My Affection
Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos - Holy Cow! (Demo)

More here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

OK, well we're all home now, so posting should resume with daily frequency. If I miss a day or two or things are a little late in these next couple weeks, I hope you'll forgive me.

Thanks to all those that tuned in to MOKB's first SIRIUS Satellite Blog Radio show on Left of Center. I guess there was a mixup or two on the production side. They got some songs out of order, but that's not the end of the world. We'll get the bugs all worked out. Dodge is now officially "Papa Dodge"

Hey guys, Dodge wanted me to let you guys know that as of about an hour ago, he is now the proud daddy of a beautiful little baby girl! He and his wife MJ welcomed little Lucy Noel into the world at around 1:20 PM EST. Mama and baby are in good health, and little Lucy is 7 lbs., 6 oz. and 20 inches long. Congrats Dodge and MJ! We want pictures!

--chris from gvsb

p.s. Oh yeah, in lieu of flowers and gifts, Dodge would like you to tune into his national radio broadcasting debut tonight on SIRIUS Satellite Radio! Dial into Left of Center channel 26 for MOKB Blog Radio tonight at 10 Eastern, 9 Central. I think Dodge is interviewing the Black Keys, so it should be a good one. A baby and a national radio debut on the same day, the guy is a machine. If you don't have SIRIUS yet, you can listen for free at SIRIUS.com. Do it. And on second thought, you should still probably send flowers and gifts.

Christmas with The Chipmunks

I'm not normally one for Christmas posts, but I'm in the season. The doctors are gonna force my baby out today. No foolin' this time. I've received Dean Martin's Christmas songs, Charlie Brown's Christmas (which is the best), and this week I received Christmas With The Chipmunks: Alvin, Simon & Theodore with David SeVille. This CD is grating after about two songs, but nothing says Christmas like singing rodents! Britney was hot though...for a cartoon, c'mon! Buy it!

Alvin & The Chipmunks w/ Dave SeVille - The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late

My baby is late, but Christmas won't be! Things will probably be a little sporadic over the next couple days, but tune in soon for gushing and baby kissing!

Oh Yeah!

I finally checked out Lupe Fiasco and all you guys that told me to were right - HOT! Food & Liquor does get nominated for worst and best album cover of 2006 too. Will Lupe ascend to Kanye-like (the guy who gave him his break) levels?

Via Audio

Via Audio

Via Audio has some decent sized names in indie music in their corner. Chris Walla from Death Cab For Cutie stumbled across their MySpace site and ended up writing about his "new favorite band" in Under The Radar magazine. Then, after a band member, Jessica Martins, slipped a copy of their EP to Jim Eno from Spoon at one of their shows in Boston, Eno ended up liking it so much that he invited the band down to Austin this past summer to produce their new record, Say Something. You've heard the term "pop gems"? Yeah, the is one of those bands that epitomizes that term. Four-part harmonies...yum! Via Audio's MySpace.

Via Audio - Modern Day Saint

"There are three distinct songwriting personalities in the initial songwriting stages. Vocalist Jessica Martins brings a cast of frustrated lovers to the table. Bassist David Lizmi takes a more cryptic route, creating story songs that are missing just enough puzzle pieces to make them mysterious, yet decipherable upon repeated listens. While Dies' guitar technique echoes craftier players such as the Edge, Summers and Howe, his songwriting reflects his love of morose 90s grunge. If a character in a Via Audio song exhibits a Layne Staley moment, Dies is probably responsible." - jezebel music
