The Archie Bronson Outfit : Derdang Derdang

The Archie Bronson Outfit : Derdang Derdang

The David Bryne warbling vocal sound has got to stop, doesn't it? Yes! No! Maybe? I mean, how many bands can keep doing this sound and be considered original? London trio, Archie Bronson Outfit pulls a whole lot of it's sound from the 80s sounds of Talking Heads and Depeche Mode and maybe the early 90s sounds of Matthew Sweet and crosses it with blues rock rifts and repetitious drum beats and ends up feeling a little bit like a down-on-their luck Modest Mouse crossed with The Rapture. How's that? More than any of that nonsense, if you like any of those bands, you'll probably like these guys.

Their 2006 album is entitled Derdang Derdang and is out on Domino Records. Dead Funny is a stomping rollick that gives that Float On/Girlfriend feel. They were down at SXSW this year too, but I missed them unfortch. Anyone catch it? Archie Bronson Outfit's MySpace.

There is a Four Tet remix of the song available on the cd single as well.

Rhino Reissues:

There have been some hella sweet Rhino reissues lately that I've been reminiscing on. The Pogues' Rum Sodomy & The Lash and The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me are two I've been listening to. Also, The Best Of Little Feat and Up From the Catacombs: The Best of Jane's Addiction

Tunes, News and Notes...

It's been a wacky couple of days and I'm a little emotionally spent from being deemed the negative center of the blogosphere. Thanks to those that have stuck with MOKB. I really appreciate it. I don't have much planned for today, so I'll just point you to some of the tunes I've been into today and some of the goodness I've found around the web. My team and I built a new website for my corporate gig and it went live today, so I've been pretty much tied to that all day. Things went relatively smoothly though, so I'm pretty stoked.

On Constant Rotation: Here are a few tracks that I've been listening to a lot lately. I didn't want to write on Jedi Mind Tricks because they are advertising on the site, but their 5th and newest album, Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell is really good, so I'm sort of breaking that rule.

More Swede greatness with Suburban Kids With Biblical Names and their latest album #3. This album, like their last, is a must buy.

Locksley's album Don't Make Me Wait came out way back in January, but I'm just now giving it a spin. It's a lot of fun, and I'm questioning how I've now gone 10 months without this fun?!

Jedi Mind Tricks - Put Em In The Grave
Suburban Kids With Biblical Names - Trumpets & Violins (CD Bonus Track)
Locksley - Don't Make Me Wait

New Magic Numbers: at Here Comes The Flood and A Plague Of Angels. I love this band. They might have been the best live show I saw all this year. If you get a chance, you must see this band live.

New Voxtrot brought to you by Gorilla Vs. Bear.

Voxtrot - Trouble

Lollapalooza live show MP3s are now available at iTunes. Full sets by many of the artists will be sold through www.livelollapalooza.com starting October 19.

Local Shows: Scourge Of The Sea (see below) will be swinging back through tomorrow night for another show at The Irving Theater OR

The Scourge Of The Sea : Live at 91.7 WEEM

Scourge Of The Sea on 91.7 FM WEEM

91.7 WEEM is a great local high school indie rock station just outside of Indianapolis in Pendleton. Indianapolis radio is terrible beyond comparision and WEEM breathes the life of indie rock goodness to at least the northside of Indianapolis on a clear day. 96th Street and up basically...which is actually Fishers and Carmel, as you locals know.

Anyhooo, The Scourge Of The Sea recently played a show at The Irving Theater, but dropped by WEEM first to play a couple live tunes for the kids.

Unbeknownst to me, because I'm really trying to stop reading promo emails, The Scourge is from Lexington, Kentucky! Robby Cosenza is actually also in MOKB beloved band The Apparitions. TSOTS also came around during Midwest Music Summit, but I've missed them both times and am kinda kicking myself. My guess is that Matty has written about them already, but I'm too lazy to check. Scourge Of The Sea's MySpace.

The Scourge Of The Sea - My Sweet One (LIVE on 91.7 WEEM-FM)

Peter Bjorn & John : Writer's Block

Peter Bjorn & John : Writer's Block

Peter Bjorn & John : Writer's BlockWell, moving on somewhat ironically I guess. Time to give more love to the Swedes, hopefully they still love me as much as I love them. I've been listening to Peter Bjorn & John's album Writer's Block since I got my grubby paws on it this past weekend. I had been listening to their blog hit Young Folks pretty much everyday since Matt Skatterbrain first brought it to everyone's attention back in June. Since that time also, the song has apparently been in heavy rotation on MTV. I don't watch MTV, so I don't know. The good news continues, Peter Morén, Bjorn Yttling and John Eriksson's new(ish) album is every bit as good as that first taste I was given back in June. It's not what I expected though. I had very high expectations, to say the least, after Young Folks made such a lasting impression. On past efforts, Peter normally handled the vocals, but the three piece shares the vocal duties throughout this one, so it gives a very mixed bag feel to the album. They also shared the songwriting duties on this one, but it remains pretty much great shoegazey pop throughout. Young Folks may be the only song that makes a lasting impression on the blogosphere from this album, but I happen to think these two, while different, are equally as enjoyable.

"It's groovy and melancholy at the same time," explains Yttling, the band's keyboard and bass player. - quote from The Guardian

The album (or at least the song Chills) is also a tribute to the band The Chills. "First we took a beat from an old Dionne Warwick tune," Yttling says, "then we made this Pink Frost [the Chills' most loved song] chorus thing. It's like a homage to them." Peter Bjorn & John' MySpace.

MOKB Covers Project Redux : Creep

Creep is widely considered the song that launched Radiohead into the world music spotlight. It was their first single from their 1993 album Pablo Honey. When it was first given limited release in September 1992, Radio 1 found it too depressing, and so after being aired only twice, it was taken off the station's playlist.

In late March 1993 they flew to Israel for their first taste of fame following its success there as a result of heavy airplay on Galei Tzahal, and late in May they flew to the USA as a San Francisco radio station had picked it up, and little by little "Creep permeated the nation's airwaves. It did not become a in the UK until September of that year almost a year after it's official release.

Thom Yorke explains the song saying that he wrote it while studying at Exeter University. It tells the tale of an inebriated man who tries to get the attention of a woman he is attracted to, by following her around. In the end, he lacks the self-confidence to pull it off. Although he usually referred to the drunken student in the third person, with no little contempt, sometimes outright denying it was him, he sometimes admitted it was.

EDIT: Before idolator has a conniption - Info Source : Wiki.

After my meeting with Dean Idolator, it appears I am facing expulsion from Blog U. I've lost my scholarship for sure and am likely to end up down the street at the local Junior Blog college. I apologize to all parties involved for the heinous plagerization of Wikipedia on my Term Blog Post Paper. I hope to not end up in a van down by the river, but it looks like that and a one-way ticket to hell. Jeebus, forgive me. It was not my intention to pull the wool over your eyes and appear to be an expert on Creep. I most certainly am not.

It looks like maybe the pot is calling the kettle black here though, as it seems idolator might be biting on someone's stizz themselves. It seems Gigi, the new tabloid of the blogs, beat them to this "story" hours ago. Maybe they're BFF though and one in the same.

EDIT: Fluxblog is mad at me too or just piling on with his buddies over at idolator. What can I say? I didn't cite. Not really purposefully, I pull info from Wiki all the time on covers posts...it hasn't been a secret really. I'm not a journalist, never have taken a journalism class. I can take my lumps like a man. I'll apologize sincerely, but making this into a "story" really is funny.

Radiohead : Creep

EDIT: I should note that I can't verify the validity of some of the artists associated with these tracks. There are obviously a lot of misnamed files in this one, judging by the comments), and any help straightening it all out is not only appreciated but also encouraged. Thanks is advance.

Radiohead - Creep
Radiohead - Creep (Acoustic)

Muse - Creep (it has been contested that this is simply Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood)
Pearl Jam - Creep (Taken down at artist's request - Sorry, I didn't know. This was sent to me, and I thought it was a live deal)
U2 - Creep (Live) - (This one is iffy)
Damian Rice - Creep
Richard Cheese - Creep
Taking Back Sunday - Creep
Scarling - Creep
Lukas Rossi - Creep
Magni - Creep
Marty Casey - Creep
(Impersonator) Bob Dylan (parody) - Creep
The Pretenders - Creep (Live)
Middlebury Dissipated Eight - Creep (a cappella)
Brandi Carlile - Creep
Jon Brion - Creep (Tom Waits jokingly impersonated)

Apparently: There are versions of this song by these four artists, but these all seem to be the same or incorrectly named. Any help sorting it out, or getting the correct versions is appreciated...

Jeff Buckley - Creep
The Cure - Creep
Tears For Fears - Creep

Cake - Creep (?)

Related, yet unrelated:

The Afghan Whigs - Creep (TLC Cover)

MOKB Covers Project Redux : Yesterday

This one has been requested numerous times and I could never find all the versions of this song that are out there, but here's a first pass on it. I'll build the list like the rest if you wanna send your's in. The song really has no personal connection for me, but seeing as how this is the "MOKB Covers Project" it would be remiss to not include the most widely covered song in the history of music. I'll let Wiki give you the history of it though...

The Beatles : Yesterday

Yesterday is a pop song originally recorded by The Beatles for their album Help! (1965). According to the Guinness Book of Records, Yesterday has the most cover versions of any song ever written, while BMI asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. The song remains popular today with more than 3000 recorded cover versions, the first hitting the United Kingdom top 10 three months after the release of Help!. Some sources still assert that White Christmas by Bing Crosby has more cover versions.

Yesterday takes the form of an acoustic ballad about a lost loved one. It was the first official recording by The Beatles that relied upon a performance by a single member of the band, although the background accompaniment of a string quartet was added a few days later during the editing stage. The final recording, which out of the band's members featured only Paul McCartney, differed so greatly from other works by The Beatles that the other three members of the band vetoed the song's release as a single in the United Kingdom. Although written solely by McCartney, the song was credited to both himself and John Lennon as "Lennon/McCartney", as were all Beatles songs written by either of the pair. - Wikipedia : Yesterday

My Brightest Diamond Covers Prince's "When Doves Cry"

Shara Worden : My Brightest DiamondThe MOKB Covers Project Redux continues today with a live performance cover. Here's a live video I shot at Luna Music Midtown here in Indianapolis today. My Brightest Diamond and Sufjan Stevens are in town today for a show at the Murat. I'll be checking it out. I know I clown on Sufjan sometimes and I'm still not really into him, but this in-store performance today by Shara Worden(aka M.B.D.) got me a whole lot more excited about this show tonight. She covered Nina Simone's Feeling Good right before she covered Prince. It was amazing, but I couldn't get the camera back out in time. Shara's voice is incredible. I mean, even in a record store with nonideal acoustics, it shined like her namesake. It was as good or better than any vocalist I've seen live. My Brightest Diamond's MySpace. Anyway, I've uploaded this one to YouTube for ya to enjoy...

MOKB Covers Project Redux : Dark End Of The Street

James Carr's Dark End Of The Street

Written by Chips Moman and Dan Penn and originally sung by James Carr in 1966. Carr, born in Mississippi, recorded in Memphis for the Goldwax Label and is widely considered one of the best soul singers of his era, alongside Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. He discovered music through the sound of gospel, listening to artists such as Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers. Along with Dark End Of The Street, Carr is best known for his other hit A Man Needs A Woman.

Carr battled drugs and alcohol, as well as stints with manic depression and was hospitalized in a mental health facility. This was sadly evident during a tour of Japan in the 1970s when he froze in front of an audience following an overdose of antidepressants and had to cancel the remainder of the tour. He had almost disappeared entirely, but started performing again on rare occasions in the early 1990s, often working with Tyrone Davis or Otis Clay. Carr had suffered from lung cancer for many years, and died at the age of 58 on January 7, 2001.

I know Eels, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, Gregg Allman, Don Dixon, Eva Cassidy and Elvis Costello have also covered this classic tune. If you have these or any other version and could send them in, I'll get them up for everyone to enjoy.

MOKB Covers Project Redux : Wonderwall

Oasis : Wonderwall

Manchester, England band Oasis have made headlines for years by making solid, tradional guitar-driven Brit rock/pop. They might be second only to the Beatles in terms of British band popularity. They hit worldwide stardom in the early 1990s with their album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but their arrogance and infamous behavior on and off stage kept them in the news in the U.S. far longer and more often, it seemed, than their music after this album. The album spawned two hit singles in Wonderwall, and Don't Look Back in Anger which reached number 2 and 1 respectively. Wonderwall was brought back to mainstream fame most recently by Ryan Adams and was featured on the hit FOX show The O.C.

As mentioned, Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher are famous for their very public warring and catty behaivor towards one another and others. Subsequently, the band has undergone several lineup changes since its inception, and the the brothers are the only original members of the very first Oasis lineup.

Oasis' second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was the second-fastest selling album of all-time in the UK at the time of it's release and has sold over 19 million records to date. A greatest hits album covering their entire career to date, will be released on November 20th, 2006. - some info from wiki

Scissors For Lefty

Scissors For Lefty

You know I like the dance hits, and one of the better EPs I've checked into lately is Scissors For Lefty. They're on Rough Trade and their full-length album Underhanded Romance will be out in the UK on October 2nd. These are the two singles they've released over there. They're a US band though, hailing from San Francisco, and unfortunately there are no current plans to release their music stateside. They are on tour right now though, so go check them out if you get a chance. If you like Arctic Monkeys and bands of that ilk, you'll probably really like these guys. Scissors For Lefty's MySpace.
