Matisyahu - Jerusalem

Matisyahu

New version of Matisyahu's Jerusalem. Is it cool to like Matisyahu? I don't know, I think I do. Hasidic reggae is probably as odd as it gets, but after seeing him at Lolla and standing outside overhearing much of his set at SXSW this year, he's growing on me. Rachel somehow knew and filled me in on all the rules of Hasidic Judaism. It's not for the easily tempted, so I would think being a reggae superstar might have it's tough days as far as religious conflict and all. Matisyahu's MySpace.

Jamie T

Jamie T

I've been listening to a lot of Jamie T since he was recommended by my girl DJ Spy. I haven't really got waaay into him, but this song is really fun and I just keep listening to it (lyrics). I honestly can't listen to English rappers or grime (Mike Skinner/Dizzee Rascal) or Arctic Monkeys and all things of the like for long periods of time. Most recently Lily Allen probably has had the most staying power with me. It's all great in small doses or in a bar, but whole albums leave me irritable.

Jamie T - Sheila (radio edit)
Jamie T - Sheila (demo)

If I had to pick another track right now, it'd be this one (Salvador). He's been compared to Arctic Monkeys, but I think The Streets (for obvious genre reasons) is a better point of comparison. The one thing I like, so far, about Jamie T (from these early, limited experiences) is like Skinner, there is some depth to him and his lyrics. It's not the enormous cleverness and wit that Skinner has, but it's not fluff either - lots of social commentary. His sample use, beats and experimentation get praise as well. Some other stand out tracks I've checked are Back In The Game and Alicia Keys.

Rockstar: Supernova Week 9 Elimination

Rockstar : Supernova

Holy Toby in terrible eye makeup! This show just has too many guys in makeup for me. I mean, I think I might put a makeup ban on MOKB for a few weeks after Rockstar concludes just so I can remember that not every guy in music wears excessive eye makeup. It's like C.C. Deville has returned and is haunting every guy on this show.

Back to the house. The performers pat themselves on the back for what they considered a great show. Then they discuss who will be in the bottom three and since they are down to six, the realization that half of them would be in the bottom three was sinking in. Back to Navarro..."Half of you will be singing for your lives!"

Killing time time...let's talk to everyone. Mangi hates photo shoots. Navarro tells him it's part of the gig. He tells Navarro not to interupt him. Navarro jokingly whips out his dick and slaps Magni with it. No, no, just kidding, but he does call him a sonofabeeyatch and jokingly warns Magni he can influence the vote. Dilana doesn't want to see anyone leave because they're like a family. Storm is ready to kick some ass if she's in the bottom three...blah, blah, blah.

Supernova performs a song and chooses Lukas to front them. Some of the crowd looks a little bored actually, the rest look a little too intensely into it. Catch them on their "killer 27 city tour". Winner winner, chicken dinner... Rob Carlos, fantasy artist, wins the trip out to see the RS finale for this website paying homage to Supernova.

Toby RandToby got the encore and performed Billy Idol's Rebel Yell again. Solid. He does a good Billy Idol.

OK, so Lukas, Storm, Ryan and Dilana all made there way through the bottom three last night. Everyone but Magni. (Rob Carlos' Magni tribute...uhhhh, er...hmmm.) Dilana actually looks pretty shook up about it. Brooke let everyone know that as far as vote totals for the show goes, Magni is the overall vote getter since it all started.

First performer in the bottom three...

Ryan StarRyan sang Baba O'Riley by The Who. I'm a big fan of this song. He douched it up by popping a champagne bottle and gay porning...er, I mean pouring it all over Toby. Man, tonight's show is all kinds of odd. Lesson one of rock and champagne guys: "Pour it over hot girl's boobies, not other guys." Ugh...can he be anymore gimmicky?! He just climbed up on the speaker. He's going home. He's got to be. Oh! Gilby actually just rolled his eyes. Man, we were all done with this after the first 30 seconds...cliche central. Pop champagne and shake it all over, jump on and off of big speaker, bang on the drummer's kit, tore off the jacket.

Storm LargeStorm was next. She sang The Beatles' Helter Skelter. Before, she lets us all know that "she always wants it". She's not doing bad, but then goes up to the band and sits on Tommy Lee's lap. Gilby pushes her off. Can't buy Gilby with sex Storm. We learned that with Jill. Besides, you saw Gilby's dog didn't you? Hey! I'm not saying anything...it's all good with me. Moving on, out of the two, I'm bias, but Ryan should be the one to go home.

Whoa! Dilana finally sees the bottom three. Fans are pissed at her backstabbing ways. Tommy is stunned. Dilana seems ready to take her medicine it seems, so here we go...

DilanaOK, so Dilana then sang Talking Heads' Psycho Killer. Starts off accapella...hmmm. Lots of weird screeches and odd vocal breaks. Maybe if I'd never heard David Bryne sing it, I might think this was passable. I don't know. This was kind of uncomfortable really. Actually, it was very Zayra. I might have praised Zayra for that.

Oh eff Gilby. That guy rolled his eyes at Ryan's performance and then tells him that he did really great tonight. Tells Storm that they haven't seen any growth from her. Last, they tell Dilana that her performance was not what they expected. It threw them for a loop, but she has too much cred with the band to give up on her yet. OK, on to the "Tommyhawk"...wow, he just sorta cut right to it. Ryan going home.

Dave tells him that he has become a fan of "The Darkhorse". Gives Ryan a chance to address the band and Ryan said that if he was their lead singer, they would have made 20 years of great music together. He then lets us all know that he's going back to being a solo artist and will see Supernova on the charts because that's where he's gonna be hanging out. Yeaaaah, the poop charts...not the pop charts...hopefully neither will be on any charts of importance.

New track from The A-Sides

The A-Sides

The A-Sides have finished recording their second album, called Silver Storms and put up a track on their website from it called Cinematic. You might remember reading about this Philly based indie pop group back in the day on MOKB. If not, check it and you can get some of their older works.

They said it was tough to decide which track to put up from this record because all the songs are pretty different and any song might make people jump to different conclusions about what they're doing. Sounds like they still have the catchy Beach Boysesque melodies and harmonies working.

New Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos Demos

Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos

Some of the tracks from Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos' yet unnamed upcoming 2007 album have been posted on Musical Family Tree. The album will probably be released in January. I don't think that's verified yet, but based on these, it's gonna be great. Rumor has it that Holy Cow! will likely be the first single. Apparently the other night in Milwaukee, Richard and the gang finished a show with five straight Weezer covers?! Any verification on this?

Rockstar: Supernova Week 9 Performances

Rockstar : Supernova
Supernova : Group Doucheout!

"Fan Selection Night" on RS. So ghey. Same damn songs we heard last season and way too many time this season. Cut to the mansion. Dilana's nasty comments from last week were revisited. Ryan gave her a bit of a hard time, but she showed she felt very bad. I kinda felt bad for her. I think she just wasn't smart enough to realize what she was doing. She got mad at some cameramen for filming her while she was crying. She slammed her glass into the concrete and a piece flew up and hit Magni in the head! HAHA! This couldn't get any better! It cut him right in the middle above the forehead. She bawled and bawled. Ryan said, "Some people just can't handle being on top." What a douche. Lukas said it best, "Holy drama, man! This is crazy." Navarro then got all Montel Williams on the group. It was ridiculous.

On to the horsepoo that is "Fan Selection"...

Time to kill, so they do a little "Lukas Heartwarming Piece". Piece of shiz. Lukas tries to sell us on the "I'm just like everybody else" crappola. I don't doubt that, but I don't care or like you any more because of it. He likes beer and video games and he was working at Hooters before RS flipping chicken wings, he just wears more makeup than everyone else...blah blah blah...

Lukas RossiAnyhooo....Gargamel In Drag then started the show off with Nirvana's Lithium. He read into the fans picking it because Dilana had sang it previous and he believed they wanted him to show her up. Riiiiiight. It was lounge-singer vegas style into raspy gurgly "yeah yeahs". Navarro addressed Lukas' rearrangement of the song, and of course we all hoped, he would tell him it was a big turd, but he and the rest of the band loved it. Like every other performance, Gliby thought "this was your best performance yet!" Shut the eff up Gilby.

MangiMagni sang Live's I Alone. We've already covered how I feel about Live. I'd rather be punched in the nuts. Magni, "mumble, mumble, mumble...I ALONE LOVE YOU...mumble, mumble, mumble...YEAAAAAAAH!" Magni came up and sang to the band. He sounded just like Ed Kowalczyk's and Eddie Vedder's love child. Navarro loved it. Gilby thought "he gave it that extra something that I (Gilby) have been asking for."

Aw man, they just showed a LG Chocolate phone commercial and a 14 year old calls her friend and discusses who got voted off, saying it's so unfair. Damn, that made me feel old. I am waaaaay above the target audience of this show. Anyone have one of those phones?

Ryan StarRyan did Clocks by Coldplay. Oh god. Standing on the piano giving rockstar fist-in-air poses. Oh, uber intense guy! Newsted addressed that Ryan was strong with the vocals when behind the piano, but not so inspiring when he gets out in front of the piano. That might have been the most intelligent thing Newsted has said this season...maybe ever. Wow.

Storm LargeStorm and Toby joined forces to sing Evanescence's Bring Me To Life. She sounded a lot like Amy Lee really. Gilby thought it was less than memorable. Jason liked it. Eh, I like Storm as you know, but this was obviously a tough one for her.

Toby RandToby then sang Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Pulled a load of hot girls on stage to dance with him. Nice move, the Supernova guys ate that up. Tommy Lee: "Grab those girls and lets head back to my dressing room!" Man, that was good. Corporate types who run the show just cringed.

Cut to Dilana in the house. You knew they'd put her last so they could bring it full circle to the end of the show. Her great redemption in song!! So typical...

DilanaOK, so Dilana ended the show with Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham. Niioce leg kick! She did a much better version of this song than whoever did it last. Navarro said it was best evs in the histoy of Rockstar seasons. Tommy Lee tried to make her feel better by saying he was "The King Of Mistakes"...funny.

At first I thought we'd see Dilana in the bottom three for tomorrow's show, but the network made sure that wouldn't happen with tonight's sobfest. I think the entire viewership is boohooing for Dilana now. At the end of the show Storm, Ryan and Lukas were in the bottom three.

Eric Bachmann : To The Races

Eric Bachmann : To The RacesEric Bachmann does have "warm" vocals. They are welcoming and heartfelt. I caught Bachmann sometime last year here in Indianapolis when he came with his other project, Crooked Fingers. I picked up their album Dignity & Shame and I enjoyed every minute, but this solo effort, his second, is even more interesting, and it is definitely more honest, giving it more power. To The Races came out this past week on Saddle Creek. Most all the songs are acoustic, simple and elegant, displaying his Appalachian roots still, and I was pleased to note one of the members of my current obsession (DeVotchKa's Tom Hagerman on violin) had even joined in to help out. I guess he wrote most of it in June and July while "voluntarily living in his van". Getting back to simplicity and staying grounded I guess. We all could probably use that. Anyway, there's not much this guy's been involved with that I haven't liked. The early work from his band Archers Of Loaf still got called out at the show last year. Bad form, but whatta ya gonna do? The fans are there and they're still passionate for what he creates. And so am I. Eric Bachmann's MySpace.

The Mudkids

The Mudkids

Since everyone associates great hip-hop with Indiana, everyone must already know about The Mudkids. Oh, you don't even associate good hip-hop and Indiana? Wha?! Why not?! Suprisingly, Choc Soreel (aka Rusty aka Russell Johnson) is and has been making some of the smartest, most interesting hip-hop in the Midwest for over a decade, and unfortunately gone somewhat unnoticed.

The Mudkids consist of Choc Soreel, Skittles and DJ Elp-Mass. Honestly, Skittles and I play softball together and it was almost a year before I knew he was even part of the group. My bad, but as I say, "It's not about when you discovered, it's just important THAT you discovered." I think I've said that.

Moving on... They were by far the most impressive group on the Twilight Sentinels/Mudkids/Dr. Octagon bill during Indianapolis' Midwest Music Summit. Prior to joining Elp-Mass (aka Tyler Knapp) in The Mudkids, Rusty was the lead singer for Birdmen of Alcatraz, one of the most popular rock bands to come from the Indianapolis underground in decades.

Led by cHoc, Indianapolis' Mudkids try to recapture the classic daisy-age sound of De La Soul and like-minded posses such as A Tribe Called Quest and the Pharcyde, employing humorous lyrics and eclectic samples that encompass classical and Indian music. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Mudkids have opened for Eminem, Wu Tang, KRS One, Royce da 5'9", Digital Underground, J5, Pharcyde, Hiero, Souls of Mischief, Atmosphere and many more esteemed hip-hop acts...most recently, as mentioned, Kool Keith. The Mudkids MySpace.

Oxford Collapse : Remember The Night Parties

Oxford Collapse : Remember The Night Parties

Oxford Collapse : Remember The Night PartiesI figure since we were just talking about Sub Pop, I should mention that Oxford Collapse have new record, Remember The Night Parties, that will be out in October on the label. Oxford Collapse are three Brooklynites that create raw, nervous jangle pop that's dripping with teenage restlessness and raucous dance-punk energy. Their music might, in blog terms, may be best described as YANP after three beers.

Oxford Collapse - Please Visit Your National Parks

Hear older Oxford Collapse works here.

Oxford Collapse plays the sounds of the suburbs, the blueprint of early summer, hopped up on candy scarfed down at bar mitzvah blowouts, at the batting cages, sneaking around all day at the multiplex, then turfing the neighbor’s lawn on a riding mower for good measure. They flip over big flat rocks and gaze fascinated at the insects living a private life beneath. They know that the devils and the details don’t need one another to get by, and demonstrate that with some of the wildest manic pop abandon heard in years.

Chad VanGaalen : Skelliconnection

Chad VanGaalen : Skelliconnection

Chad VanGaalen's Skelliconnection has been covered at length in the blogosphere I guess, but I only started listening to it about a week ago. It actually was only released this past Tuesday, so maybe many of you have only been listening to it for a week as well. He's on Sub Pop, so everyone usually loves to jump on anything they put out. Both reviewing and purchasing...rightfully so though, as this album is amazing to say the least.

I've been interested in him since his debut, Infiniheart, but when Skelliconnection came in, I just sort of put it in the pile to check out when I had some spare time. Big mistake huh? I know. Anyway, I was reading on Sub Pop about how he was also a talented illustrator and annimator to boot. I love to make and collect art as well, so of course this was appealling and adding that element of relating to an artist on a personal level. He makes homemade instruments to add in his recordings...I mean, he's just one of those uber creative types that obviously doesn't have enough outlets for all the genius going on in his brain. He played just about every instrument for the recording of this album, which he recorded in his home studio, and did the artwork for the cover jacket. He also directs his own videos.

Sooo, in my readings, all this was impressive, but then I listened to the album. WHOA. VanGaalen switches genres with ease and complete success, moving from tradional folk Americana ballads to post-punk to electro synth-pop, it's all great. The layers and elements in the music from just standard driving guitars to electronically created twangs and beeps to every standard and odd type of percussion you can't even identify, but know you haven't heard before with any regularity. Banjo, chimes, harmonica, if you can think of it, he's probably used it in a song on this album. And in his use, this guy can do no wrong it seems. Add another one to the Top Ten, which I guess is twenty deep by now, but anyone thinking that this may be a weaker year in music than last, really needs to check this album.

Buy it here or used at Amazon for as low as $5.50. Chad VanGaalen's MySpace.

Heartless Bastards : All This Time

Heartless Bastards : All This Time

Heartless Bastards : All This TimeThere are few female voices that affect me like Erika Wennerstrom of Heartless Bastards. It's perfect. It's bluesy, bold and beautiful. It's maybe the most under-appreciated female voice in indie rock. I've seen her twice live and have been simply blown away both times. She's joined by Mike Lamping on bass and Kevin Vaughn on drums but, and no offense boys, if you really notice them, you're not paying attention to what's going on. They're great, don't get me wrong, but Wennerstrom's voice is what's on showcase here. Wennerstrom feels like she's been predestined to be a singer/songwriter and after you hear her, you'll know why and agree.

Rockstar: Supernova Week 8 Elimination

Rockstar : Supernova

OK, show opens with a standing ovation for the final seven. Brooke: "Enjoy the applause now because unfortunately, for one of you, it's gonna be your last night on the stage." Wow.

Cut to the house after the show. Dilana tells Ryan he woulda been nothing without the house band. Dilana then goes on to say that she is getting more votes because she's been giving everything she's had from day one. Magni then tells her she's doing the same thing over and over again. They then cut on her wacky eyelashes from that night. Then they show the performers looking online at all the mushy fan shite. Obvs, they didn't look here. Anyway, one fan wrote in to compliment Ryan and Dilana suggesting they co-front Supernova. Ryan and Dilana both said they kill shoot each other. Dilana went on to say "Over her dead body."

Dave addressed both the co-fronting the of the band suggestion and the fact that Dilana said that Ryan was nothing without the house band, and asked her if she was joking. She said no and then backtracked really quickly. It didn't go over well really. Dave then let Ryan say his peace and he tried to make a backhanded compliment to Dilana and said she was on top and talking down to those below her. Dilana was bothered fo' sho. I don't think she's a big meany really, and I do think Ryan is a bit of a little bizo, so I won't take sides here.

Cut to the performers practicing with Supernova on one of their new songs at the studio. Lukas wears makeup every time he's on TV. I think he wears it every day. The maintenance on this guy must be ridiculous. Anyway, Supernova liked how Toby brought it, so they gave him the "honor" of playing with them on this week's show. This song, guessing it's called Keep It On The Level, at least with Toby fronting it, didn't sound as "old school" as the previous. It was a little more "on" as to what's popular these days. Obvs with a different lead, but maybe that's an indicator as to what they might need. Oh by the way, Lukas didn't applaud when the song was complete...the only one who didn't.

OK, time filler...workshop on dealing with the media. Lukas was first. He was asked if he was a fan of the bands Supernova was made up of and claimed he first had sex to the Metallica song Unforgiven. OK, yeah right. Maybe with his hand. Gross. I don't even wanna think about it. I just threw up in my mouth. OK, moving on, Dilana dropped the big bombs and told the media that Lukas really gets on her nerves and she wants to punch him in the face sometimes. She continued on to knock Toby and Magni's commitment to the show. It came off terribly. Dave addressed her and told her what an idiot she was. He was stunned. I was too! I mean I love that she said it, but HELLO!, get a clue. You're being filmed at all times retard. Dilana apologized and said she screwed up. It defused the situation a little bit, but then Dave asked Lukas about what Dilana said and he took the high road and increased her guilt. Dave then talked about the need for thick skin in business. Even addressed the fact that the "winner" would be knocked on for winning a reality show.

On to the bottom three. Patrice, Storm, Toby and Magni were the performers that floated through the bottom three last night.

MangiMagni for the second week in a row, was first to be called out. Magni chose Jimi Hendrix's Fire. Pretty good, no real complaints.

PatriceSo Patrice, no suprise, was in the bottom three again. She performed Middle Of The Road by The Pretenders. Patrice either cut her upper lip on the mic or had one hella bad cold sore. Looks like she cut it on the mic.

Toby RandToby was last in the bottom three. The shirt yank off is a pure d-bag move and hopefully Toby will learn from this. He sang Stone Temple Pilot's Plush. He just got picked to sing with Supernova, he coulda farted this one out and they wouldn't have sent him home. Come on, visualize that. Oh man, I'm laughing just thinking about it. Gross. Anyway, he did better than Patrice anyway.

Patrice had to know she was screwed. They told Magni "he was so far from going home" the last time and, as mentioned, they just picked Toby to sing with them. Gilby then addressed each performer. He addressed that this was Patrice's fourth time in the bottom three and that was getting harder and harder to ignore. He then mentioned to Magni that even though this was his second straight trip to the bottom three, he did a killer version of Fire. They then told Toby he was safe and they were shocked that he was in the bottom three. Tommy then did his whole "This sucks" bit and sent Patrice home. Good job America.

Next week is "Viewer's Choice" which I don't really understand because it seems to just be a list of three songs they've already sang with one other choice. What's the deal here? Sing a song they've already sang or one choice that they haven't? Ghey.

How much you wanna bet Dilana, no matter how good, is in the bottom three next week?

Tap Tap

Tap Tap : Lanzafame

Tap Tap is from Reading, England and if you like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, you're gonna like these guys...guaranteed. If not, let me know and I'll punch you in the ovary. OK, kidding. Anyway, it's shiny, happy, yelpy, crashing, jangly, messy pop and I love it.

They're on
