DJ Terry Diabolik

I think I really only want to be a part-time DJ for the cool names you get to call yourself. It wouldn't be fair to only feature DJ Never Forget without mentioning his twin brother and fellow DJ, DJ Terry Diabolik. DJ Terry Diabolik brings it in a soul/funk/motown vein. With Never Forget and DJ Balls Deep, the three host weekly dance parties in NYC at Lucky Cat in Brooklyn and Rated X across the bridge. Also, with a favorite artist like Otis Redding, you know what you can expect...soul goodness.

Tape N Tapes Sign with Label!

I know you probably all ready know, since The Pioneer Press broke the story yesterday afternoon, but Tapes n Tapes has signed with XL. You can read it here or Chris' mention of it. I'll be seeing them twice this weekend in Chicago with The Wrens and Essex Green. I'll bring back lots of photos and maybe a scoop or two on recent TnT events. If not, I'll just come back with my socks thouroughly rocked off.

Georgia Anne Muldrow

Georgia Anne Muldrow

Georgia Anne Muldrow : WorthnothingsStones Throw artist Georgia Anne Muldrow is a student of the game. She's been called a brilliant revolutionary even. Her influences are as wide as they are deep - from Bjork to John Coltrane, A Tribe Called Quest, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, David Bowie, Thelonious Monk, The Wu Tang Clan, Chaka Khan, Nina Simone and Sun Ra - just to name a chosen few. She lists numerous more. The point is, she is a student and pulls from a deep history of not only Soul and Jazz artists, but Rock, Rap, R&B and many many other genres. With this knowledge she creates a sound that is uniquely her own. It is stripped down, but it is not limited.

She wrote, composed, produced and mixed her whole debut album and even handled the CD art. Georgia Anne Muldrow's MySpace. You can also download her at eMusic.

The Eastern Stars - July 5th, 1969

The Eastern Stars debut with July 5th, 1961. New York folk singers Rob Corradetti and Kaia Wong got together in the Summer of 2004 to record this album on an 8-track in Rob's basement in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

The Eastern Stars

The Eastern Stars take their name from Masonic roots. The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both men and women may belong, so they're all about male/female unity. Their influences are mainly bands which feature a dual boy/girl lead vocals (The Vaselines, The Mamas and the Papas, Galaxie 500, and fellow New Yorkers, The Moldy Peaches) or use multiple "tripped out" voices (Pink Floyd, Love, Sonic Youth). They are also influenced by the Northwest sounds of mid-nineties K and Kill Rock Star bands such as The Softies, Beat Happening, Beck, Heavenly, Elliot Smith, and Lois. The Eastern Stars' MySpace.

I really like the songs They Know What To Do, Little Punk (very 60s psych-pop), The Ticket That Exploded, In Russian Blue and Secret #. All are relatively short with only 3 songs on the whole album going over 3 minutes.

The Eastern Stars - They Know What To Do
The Eastern Stars - Little Punk

Kaia Wong was born at the Hammond organ in a suburb of Philadelphia and now
lives in a Brooklyn warehouse, Rubulad. She plays saxophone, Moog Opus 3, sings (and hula hoops) in Mixel Pixel. She has toured the world with The Luminescent Orchestrii on her fiddle. She also makes lip balm and soap, and occasionally explodes.

Rob Corradetti is a self-taught musician. Since being struck by lightning when he was 15 he has recorded over 300 songs on his portable 8-track under the name Mixel Pixel and now The Eastern Stars. He also makes bright, psychedelic artwork and comic books.

DJ Never Forget

DJs are cool. It's a load of pressure...more than having a blog. I mean you're up there and if the party is flailing, it's on you man. Fo' reez, I might kick your ass if you leave me a bad comment, but if you weren't dancing, I'd FLIP OUT. Just kidding, I'm a dancer not a fighter. Actually I'm a dance-fighter. I am a master of the Brazilian dance fighting technique, Capoeira. Serious. OK, I'm totally lying...but it'd be cool if I was...maybe.

DJ Never Forget

DJ Never Forget is a blogger fan and friend and the kid chops and screws up some pretty good mixes as well. I checked this one yesterday and really enjoyed it. It contains some serious MOKB favs like Ghostland Observatory, The Knife and Hot Chip. Can't go wrong. Find out more about him and his DJ collective at Gothamist.

Tracklisting:

Le Tigre - After Dark (Lo-Fi-Fnk Remix)
Pompei - I Have A Tail
Caged Baby - Hello There (Presets Remix)
Ghostland Observatory - Sad Sad City
Hot Chip - No Fit State
Goldfrapp - Number One (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Mix Mix)
The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health
LAX - Unknown Track

DJ Never Forget - Enemy Infiltration Mix

Other DJs you best be checkin' into:

DJ Shadow's Changling over at Bows + Arrows.

Kevin put up some DJ Z-Trip vs. Run Run Run yesterday too. I owe Kev for getting me into Z-Trip. Baaaaadaaaasssssss.

Diplo is always a fan favorite. You can find Spank Rock's That P***y On Me (Diplo Tonite Remix) over at The Rock N Roll Star.

Superguidis

Superguidis

So MJ is in Venezuela for the rest of the week and since I have no Venezuelan indie rock, I will stay on the same continent and give you some Brazilian indie rock. Superguidis are an indie rock band from Porto Alegre and Guaíba, Brazil, which are two cities that are about 30 minutes apart. They're singing in Portuguese, but good rock is good rock in any language, so if you can get past that, I think you'll really like them. They are heavily influenced by that early nineties indie rock sound and are signed to Senhor F Records. Superguidis MySpace.

For fans of Guided By Voices, Foo Fighters, Yo La tengo, Pavement, Weezer and Teenage Fanclub.

Wilderness, War and Football

Archer Prewitt : WildernessI finally checked into Archer Prewitt's album Wilderness upon reccomendation from Ryan @ Muzzle Of Bees. It's great. I was able to download it on eMusic. You can check it out with the 50 free downloads eMusic offers just for signing up for a trial account. You can cancel quickly and easily with no catch after you've used them, but I've stayed on with the $19.99 a month plan and it is some of the best money I spend each month. Plus, the day my 90 monthly downloads re-ups is like Christmas.

Archer Prewitt - O, Ky
Archer Prewitt - Go Away

Other noteworthy listens:

Genna Giacobassi

Genna Giacobassi of Fiction Like Candy was mentioned during the MOKB contest of "Best Ladies of Indie Rock" so we've kept an eye on her. She does a good cover of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Details Of War.

Fiction Like Candy - Details Of War
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Details Of War (Live On KCRW)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Details Of War (Live XFM Session)

NFL Draft Weekend:

NFL DraftNFL fans rejoice, it's draft weekend - a time when your team either geniuses up or boneheads down. The Colts need a running back, but will likely pass on LenDale White should he drop that far. D'Angelo Williams and Laurence Maroney likely will not drop that far. There is talk of moving Marlin Williams to safety, so Mike Doss could soon be on the move or entering his last year in Indy. The Colts could still use some help at corner if Marlin is moved. That will probably happen gradually if it happens at all.

Reggie Bush still goes number 1, but Jay Cutler is still wowing many "Draft Experts" and is more often being dubbed "the sure thing" of the three quarterbacks. There are plenty of no-brainers that will be successful, Mario Williams, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, AJ Hawk to name a few. I'm really interested in TE Vernon Davis, he's a physical freak of nature, so you gotta think he will be unbelievable, but he is actually quite shorter than a lot of the high-profile TE's drafted in recent years. I wish I could sit on the couch all weekend and waste it away in a drunken stupor yelling at the TV when teams pick stupidly, but alas...I'll be out of town and will likely miss the whole shabang this year. You got any draft thoughts or insight?

Dudley Perkins & Gnarls Barkley

Dudley Perkins : Expressions

Dudley Perkins is back with his second effort, Expressions which is produced by beat-master Madlib. Perkins is highly influenced by George Clinton, Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown and the rest of the godfathers of soul. Some of these retro-soul tracks are enjoyable and strong, but as Spine Magazine says, some are just a mess. Spine sums it up well with the idea that Dudley envokes a Macy Gray on crack persona throughout different points on the album leaving you cringing - he never seems to resolve his style and flow. Without much of the accompaniment and production, these songs just don't stand up. Come Here Dear, Inside and Testin' Me are some of the stronger ones worth checking out.

Dudley Perkins - Come Here My Dear
Dudley Perkins - Funky Dudley

Gnarls Barkley : CrazyThere was some talk around the blogger forums that Gnarls Barkley's Crazy was this year's Hey Ya. I was not in agreement (or agreeance!) on this bold claim, but I can see this song being a pretty decent mainstream radio hit. Recently Pitchfork interviewed the duo - Gnarls Barkley: Pitchfork Interview. The song is also seeing multiple covers - my favorite being this one by The Kooks. I know I may be in the minority, but this record actually doesn't live up to the hype for me. It's a cool project and combines two very creative individuals, but I think burnout set in very quickly for me on the album. I know it's not out to the general public yet, so I apologize that I am speaking of something that you may not yet have access to, but I just wanted to give you that little pre-review thought. Both tracks provided by Swoon.

Kooks - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley cover)
Ray LaMontagne - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley cover).

In The Blogs:

Check out this exclusive content! Garrison had lead singer of Voxtrot, Ramesh Srivastava, drop a cover of Blondie's Shayla at a recent interview.

In The Movies:

Silent Hill

I went to see Silent Hill last night. I was informed today that it was a video game movie, which explains everything now. Silent Hill, in one word: BAAARRRRFFFF!!! Terrible. I'm more scared of the dentist.

There were some cool villianous creatures though, but really it was junk. MJ is in Venezuela this week, so it's my chance to go see all those movies I'd never have a chance of dragging her to...so far, I'm 0-1. Any suggestions? I think I'm just gonna rent a bunch of Kung-Fu and Porn this week. They really should make Kung-Fu Porn.

Tacks, the Boy Disaster

Tacks, the Boy Disaster

Austin-based Tacks, the Boy Disaster is a GvB favorite and a band that I really enjoy as well. Chris and I both agree that this is one of Tack's best songs. An unmastered version made it's way around the internerd a couple months back, but this is the cleaned up mastered and mixed version, straight from the band. It's really a beautiful song. You can also download Tacks, the Boy Disaster's Matilda at their MySpace.

Kool Keith is back with his latest alter ego: Mr. Nogatco on his new release Nogatco Rd. (Dr. Octogon spelled backwards). Keith has a had an up and down career, but he is always inventive and original. You can guarantee he is going to push in new and different directions. Nogatco Rd. is spattered with rock and electro beats and strong hip-hop production. It was produced by Iz-Real (of the MF Doom aka Viktor Vaughn release Venomous Villain). Kool Keith's MySpace.

James Figurine (Jimmy Tamborello aka Dntel)

Jimmy Tamborello : James FigurineThe latest project from Jimmy Tamborello, the other half of The Postal Service who is also known as Dntel, is called James Figurine. The new album is called Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake and is out July 11th on Plug Research.

Of the album’s influences, Jimmy says, “In November of 2001 my band Figurine went on a short tour of Germany with Lali Puna. Our label there, Monika, set us up with a driver to get from show to show. She only brought three or four tapes to listen to on the drives, mostly techno. I’d never paid much attention to dancefloor-oriented electronic music, but listening to the same tapes over and over again (especially Kompakt’s pop-leaning Total 3 and some 7”s on Parfum) while driving through Germany made a giant impression on me. So this record was supposed to be an extra melodic, minimal techno record with some sparse vocals, but my technopop tendencies got the best of me, the songs slowly filled up, and this is what I ended up with.”

The album features guest appearances from Jenny Lewis and Erlend Oye, as
well as additional production by John Tejada

The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir

Scotland Yard Gospel Choir

Led by their frontman Elia, Chicago based The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir are one of the more exciting unsigned bands out there in my opinion.

Scotland Yard Gospel ChoirThe core four are Elia, Stephanie, Ellen and Mark, but they bring in a rotating group of at least eight different muscians to fill out their sound. With songs featured on The O.C. and indie movie soundtracks, praise from The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and a new album to be released at some point this summer, SYGC will be making some noise on the scene this year. Get in early! Their brand of orchestral pop shows their obvious open love for Belle & Sebastian, but this comparison is no sore spot for them. In fact, it's one they embrace with pride. Elia was even in a Belle & Sebastian video. I think with these new songs though, they are finding their own sound and moving in a great direction. Another of their new songs, Aspidestra, which I'm not posting is equally as good if not better than these two. I'm really excited about this band...Did I just get my hype machine out of the closet?! Maybe, but trust me, check into them and you'll be singing their praises right next to me.

Scotland Yard Gospel Choir - Then And Not A Moment Before (Highly Rec'd!)

AOL : The Interface - Download MP3 Podcasts

AOL Interact : The Editors & The Raconteurs

I love podcasting. I love learning about the band and hearing the music all in one sitting. I mentioned them in the previous post, and yes it is media giant AOL, but after posting all of - the complete opposite of AOL - WOXY's podcasts, it's only fair I give these guys their deserved time. Plus they are on a good path with these Interface podcasts and covering bands that aren't so mainstream. If they throw up a Rihanna podcast though, I'm done with 'em. They have interviews, performances, photo galleries, a 5 Facts feature and even DJ picks from members of the bands they feature. I love finding out what or who artists are listening to. Besides The Raconteurs, The Interface has also featured The Editors in the same fashion.

Shooter Jennings - Electric Rodeo

Shooter Jennings : Electric Rodeo

All my hipsters are gonna have to take this post off, because this one's for me and the roots (Although there is news below you should read!). You can't talk about Shooter Jennings without first mentioning that he is the son of the original outlaw and country great Waylon and female country singer, Jessi Colter. It's just the blessing and the curse I guess...I think I'd take it as a blessing. He was born into the music and spent his first few years of life in the tourbus crib, but Shooter - at least at first, tried hard not to ride the coattails of his father's fame. I mean, he's actually named after his father, but he's not pulling a "Jr." on you. He's proud of it though and well he should be. His sound is now firmly supplanted in it's outlaw country roots, but he's the kind of guy who still likes to rock. He's subbed for Axl Rose onstage – twice – with Guns N' Roses. He struggled early to find his sound (and may still be somewhat at times), and after a short L.A. rock career with his band Stargunn, he moved to New York to regroup. He later returned to Los Angeles with a stack of songs, assembled a band he dubbed the "357s", and recorded a new album.

In 2004, he signed to Universal South Records, and released his first record, Put the 'O' Back in Country.

Shooter Jennings

He just released his second full-length, Electric Rodeo, this month and it'll make you stomp and holler, but it's got enough smokey late-nighters too to keep you paced. It starts off with a bang with it's title track, but slips quickly into a Bon Jovi-esque Gone To Carolina which might as well be Dead Or Alive and is really just plain dead. He bounces right back though with a Waylonesque sing-a-long in Some Rowdy Women and keeps the pace from there. He actually envokes his father and his bloodline much more in this album than ever before. He brings a brand of country not often, if ever, found in the current mainstream of country and if all country music were like this, I'd be a much bigger fan. Highlights include the title track Electric Rodeo, The Song Is Still Slipping Away, Hair Of The Dog, Little White Lines and Black Magick. Aviators is humorous even if it is a little contrived.

Shooter Jennings - Electric Rodeo

Shooter is in Louisville tonight, playing Headliners, so get out of the house tonight and see a great show at a great venue. An added note, he also portrays his father in the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line. For fans of Waylon Jennings, Lynyrd Skynyrd and great blends of country and rock.

Other News:

The big news today is the shake-up in Tapes 'n Tapes. I am saddened by this, but I wish both parties the best as always.

Bellaparker

Bellaparker

Bellaparker played SXSW this year, but I hadn't heard about them, so I didn't see them. I got this song, The Things We Say, in my inbox and checked and rather like it...enough to do some more searching. They are an Austin, TX three-piece with obvious comparisons to U2 and Coldplay - Who you may hate on publicly, but you know each have more than a couple songs that you like. I mean, if you ask me, the early stuff from each is undeniably good...maybe they've each gone corporate, but I can forgive them - you should too. Bono's got mouths to feed.

Bellaparker are on Silent Uproar Records and here is their MySpace.
