The Besnard Lakes
I talked about Merge, but Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar arguably had the best catalog of releases in 2006 as well. In February, The Besnard Lakes will release The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse on Jagjaguar. The Besnard Lakes are another large band out of Montreal. The band centers around husband and wife, Jace Lasek and Olga Gorea and the record was recorded at Lasek's own Breakglass Studios, which is the studio of choice for bands like Wolf Parade, Islands and Sunset Rubdown. They'll draw numerous comparisons to the harmonious psych-rock bands of the 60's and 70's (Beach Boys/Mamas & The Papas) as well as contemporaries like Brothers & Sisters and Broken Social Scene.
