MOKB Covers Project Redux : Creep
Creep is widely considered the song that launched Radiohead into the world music spotlight. It was their first single from their 1993 album Pablo Honey. When it was first given limited release in September 1992, Radio 1 found it too depressing, and so after being aired only twice, it was taken off the station's playlist.
In late March 1993 they flew to Israel for their first taste of fame following its success there as a result of heavy airplay on Galei Tzahal, and late in May they flew to the USA as a San Francisco radio station had picked it up, and little by little "Creep permeated the nation's airwaves. It did not become a in the UK until September of that year almost a year after it's official release.
Thom Yorke explains the song saying that he wrote it while studying at Exeter University. It tells the tale of an inebriated man who tries to get the attention of a woman he is attracted to, by following her around. In the end, he lacks the self-confidence to pull it off. Although he usually referred to the drunken student in the third person, with no little contempt, sometimes outright denying it was him, he sometimes admitted it was.
EDIT: Before idolator has a conniption - Info Source : Wiki.
After my meeting with Dean Idolator, it appears I am facing expulsion from Blog U. I've lost my scholarship for sure and am likely to end up down the street at the local Junior Blog college. I apologize to all parties involved for the heinous plagerization of Wikipedia on my Term Blog Post Paper. I hope to not end up in a van down by the river, but it looks like that and a one-way ticket to hell. Jeebus, forgive me. It was not my intention to pull the wool over your eyes and appear to be an expert on Creep. I most certainly am not.
It looks like maybe the pot is calling the kettle black here though, as it seems idolator might be biting on someone's stizz themselves. It seems Gigi, the new tabloid of the blogs, beat them to this "story" hours ago. Maybe they're BFF though and one in the same.
EDIT: Fluxblog is mad at me too or just piling on with his buddies over at idolator. What can I say? I didn't cite. Not really purposefully, I pull info from Wiki all the time on covers posts...it hasn't been a secret really. I'm not a journalist, never have taken a journalism class. I can take my lumps like a man. I'll apologize sincerely, but making this into a "story" really is funny.

EDIT: I should note that I can't verify the validity of some of the artists associated with these tracks. There are obviously a lot of misnamed files in this one, judging by the comments), and any help straightening it all out is not only appreciated but also encouraged. Thanks is advance.
Radiohead - Creep
Radiohead - Creep (Acoustic)
Muse - Creep (it has been contested that this is simply Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood)
U2 - Creep (Live) - (This one is iffy)
Damian Rice - Creep
Richard Cheese - Creep
Taking Back Sunday - Creep
Scarling - Creep
Lukas Rossi - Creep
Magni - Creep
Marty Casey - Creep
(Impersonator) Bob Dylan (parody) - Creep
The Pretenders - Creep (Live)
Middlebury Dissipated Eight - Creep (a cappella)
Brandi Carlile - Creep
Jon Brion - Creep (Tom Waits jokingly impersonated)
Apparently: There are versions of this song by these four artists, but these all seem to be the same or incorrectly named. Any help sorting it out, or getting the correct versions is appreciated...
Jeff Buckley - Creep
The Cure - Creep
Tears For Fears - Creep
Cake - Creep (?)
Related, yet unrelated:
The Afghan Whigs - Creep (TLC Cover)
Labels: mokb covers project

53 Talk back to yo' mama!:
the whigs version is a cover of the TLC song. they never covered the radiohead one.
i have the chino xl song "kreep". which while not a cover per se, does jack the chorus. it's on y other machine though.
The Tears For Fears, Cure and Jeff Buckley track all seem to be the same song (and sound nothing like the last two artists).
Also, The Cake track is the Radiohead original.
im not too sure if that acapella version is thom york. anybody know for sure?
thanks chap...boy, this one bombed. I'll have to go back and check the songs and links. apologies all.
While you are checking your links and song you might as well take down those so called rockstar songs. On second thought just leave them up because they are so very awesome. And to quote Don't Need Anything from the yesterday post "while i am someone who appreciates completism, shame on you for posting anything RockStar"
The U2 version has 2 guitars, and doesn't sound enough like Bono to convince me.
The Damien Rice version is tight, though.
A few covers I know of that I can send you if you can't dredge them up on your own:
* Jon Brion playing "Creep" in a honky-tonk style and singing in Tom Waits' voice;
* Hard N' Phirm's "Rodeohead," which is more a montage of Radiohead's greatest hits, done in a C&W style; and
* Tori Amos. (Everybody sigh, whether it be from dreamy desire or exhausted exasperation.)
I'll consult the library and see if there's any others.
I don't have a copy of it, but there is a Spanish version of "Creep" called "Perro" by Curanderos.
hmmm, I would agree that sounds nothing like U2.
Listening on! Thanks :)
I'm pretty sure there is a Bob Dylan cover of "Creep" floating around on the internet
oops you got it already.
The a cappella song (note the spelling), I've got as being by the Middlebury Dissipated Eight. And I'd trust that reasonably well, given that they're not a particularly big name, and thus, it's not a name particularly likely to get associated with a song they weren't responsible for.
I've also got an a cappella recording by USC's Reverse Osmosis, want it?
no offense man, but this is a terrible list - first of all, that definitely aint jeff buckley - secondly, that DEFINITELY aint muse - the one you have labeled "muse" is simply thom yorke and johnny greenwood doing an acoustic version of their own song - and lastly, the pearl jam version might be them (definitely vedder), but it is a mockery of the original song - they play the wrong chords and sing the wrong lyrics - id just stick to the pablo honey version - no need to cover creep, its already perfect
Cut the man some slack!
yeah, compared to previous covers list, this one came out with a lot more flaws. Lots of tracks misnamed out there on the internerd. Sorry for all the confusion guys...I'll sort through, rename and and repost this evening.
The Buckley/Cure/TFF version is Tears For Fears - the b-side to their 'God's Mistake' single. There's an interesting instrumental version at edmundwelles.com/EW/EW.music.htm and another cover by Anni Rossi was posted a couple days ago at musicforants.blogspot.com/2006/09/anni-rossi.html.
Also, yes, if you have other versions, please email them to dodge77(at)gmail(dot)com.
and for those who are way too interested in correcting my spelling and grammar...Acappella as one word and not two = IN DEE FACE!, but I'll change it to appease the masses
Am I the only one who thinks Creep is whole lot like the Hollies' Air that I Breathe?
that TBS one came up as acoustic radiohead on my Itunes...
and it doesnt sound much like Adam to me...
JJ
idolator just blew up your spot for not crediting wikipedia for writing, well, this entire post.
BUMMER FOR YOU DUDE!
so did Gerard
j church did a wicked sweet cover of creep too...but i don't have it. it was on their kittums in a coma 7".
Hey, my man. I think that version credited to Pearl Jam is actually Eddie Vedder with the band Birdman, from some sessions they did in 2000. More info here:
http://members.tripod.com/~partingways/other/birdman.html
Yeah that's Eddie doing Creep in a PRIVATE session that was not supposed to be distributed let alone put up on someones "blog". Take it down...
Hey Dodge, like others have said that's not U2 doing Creep, they actually haven't ever covered the whole song. They used to snippet a few bars of the song after elevation on their elevation tour.
This post has been removed by a blog administrator.
The a capella version is definitely not by the Middlebury Dissipated Eight, since they've never recorded a Radiohead song. It's also not by either the Brown Derbies or Rockapella, and it didn't appear on any BOCA compilations. Unfortunately, the trail gets pretty hard to follow after that, since there are so many college groups.
I think the "Muse" version is actually Radiohead's acoustic version from the Iron Lung EP:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:4sy67uy080jg
Used to have that EP pre-CD collection robbery of '03.. and I think it sounds exactly like the "Muse" version posted here.
Actually, I'm positive now. Just relistened.. and this is definitely the Iron Lung EP version. Cause he does the dip in his voice when he says "very"..
Idolator sucks. Hard. What, did they just discover wikipedia or something?
So I guess Idolator's next big story is gonna EXPOSE the secret that the MOKB mascot isn't original either!! :)
Dodge -- thanks for doing what you're doing!
No, that is defenitley not Matt Bellamy from muse in this version. I know his voice. Although I'd really like to hear a version sung by Bellamy
perhaps people are upset with you because you blatantly plagiarized. regardless of the source, you stole someone else's words. whether or not it's common practice for bloggers to do so, you should know better than to expect respect for your future work once you've been caught stealing.
I think we're all clear on that Anon. It's why I've apologized and all I can do it move on and learn.
talk about much ado about pretty much nothing... who is double checking these blog entries anyway? mahfuckers need to get a life/job. this is a blog. it aint the new yorker.
Hey Dodge!! why can't download any of the creep songs!!!????
worthless filehost...the files are there and as soon as the host gets it's shit together (which will probably be sometime tonight when traffic drops off), you'll be able to download them.
i'm too lazy to read through everybody elses comments, so sorry if this is a repeat, but i went to a cherry mondroe concert this summer and they did a cover of creep.. idk if they recorded it or anything though.
ps- i need to learn how to spell.
its cherry monroe not cherry monDroe
longtime reader here, Dodge. Just wanted to say you're still A-OK in my book. You've made every possible effort to correct what you did, plus, your blog is still awesome.
Dude, if people ride you about technical difficulties they shoud pay more for their music.
Also, the great Hispanic rapper Chino XL used "Creep" as a hook for his jam, Kreep.
That's definitely not Muse
yo man. fuck all that noise, you're doing the mp3 blog searcher a huge servicee. don't let his be the end of the cobers project. you had a solid restart: don't let haters quell that shit. fine work. everything on the internet must be taken with a grain of salt. who cares if there were a few mislabels? more covers of creep than I had in the first place.
Pretty ironic for people downloading songs from an mp3 blog to complain about stealing. And pretty ironic for Idolator or Fluxblog to criticize anybody for anything (what with the complete unreadability of their blogs). My $.02.
Are you sure that is Taking Back Sunday. I always thought that version was just an acoustic version of the song by radiohead.
muse have never covered a radiohead song due to the rep between the 2 bands. its just an acoustic peformance of creep by thom and jonny.
