Sympathy For The Devil
Credit for this post goes out to Music Is Art for putting together this list on the heels of the MOKB Covers Project. Please visit them and say thanks!

We talked a little previously about The British Invasion of the '60s when I mentioned The Kinks. Obviously, unlike The Kinks, The Rolling Stones rose to great prominence (then and now) and still sell-out huge arenas worldwide. They've been active since 1962! "Sympathy For The Devil" was the opening track of The Stones' 1968 album Beggars Banquet.
The song is sung with vehemence and swagger by Mick Jagger as a first-person narrative and commentary from the point of view of a suave and sophisticated Lucifer. It is often claimed that the lyrics were inspired by The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. - Wiki
Because of this song, and a couple previous references, The Stones drew heavy criticism for "dabbling in Satanism". It should be noted, however, that one interpretation of this song is that "The Devil" is in fact mankind...the lyrics are a brief history of some of the most notable attrocities committed by man against man.

18 Talk back to yo' mama!:
what a treat--especially with 6-6-6 (6 June 2006) looming....
once again you've laid our souls to waste....
Great stuff, thanks for this!
If you're looking for other songs to do this sort of thing with, how about Creep by Radiohead or Boys Don't Cry by The Cure?
What? No mention of any of the Laibach versions of Sympathy?
I seem to remember a bluegrass version as well. No idea who did it, but it was pretty amazing.
the drumming near the end of the sandie shaw version has nearly been responsible for causing three seperate major traffic incidents cause i can't help finger-drumming the steering wheel (although that sounds like a euphimism for something else!)

Hmm, i check all my infos and searching all Bootleg-Guides of The Sisters Of Mercy but this song isn't describe anywhere. I think it isn't a Cover of Sisters.
The "Sisters of Mercy" version is almost certainly not by them. The vocal style is completely wrong (Andrew Eldritch has a really, really deep voice and I've never heard it distorted) and they tend to be a lot more guitar-heavy as well.
It's not the Black Crowes either. Wouldn't mind knowing who it is, coz I like it!
U2 Has a brief homage to "Sympathy"
in the midst of their song "Bad" when they played it live on the Rattle and Hum tour.
There was a TV movie (an ABC Movie of the Week, maybe) about a runner called 'The Jericho Mile' -- every time the guy ran (in slow motion, too) you'd hear score music that sure as hell SOUNDED like a ripoff of 'Sympathy for the Devil' --
funny what you remember (and what you don't)
Killing Heidi did a version of this too...unfortunately I don't have it anymore - if I did I'd send it to you. I must try and find it though
OMG all these songs have been dissapeared? any way to get them back? esp the byrne cover which I've yet to hear!
