Superman & The White Whale

I'm a comic book geek. Well, I used to be, when I didn't have a house and a wife and a kid on the way. When comic books didn't cost $5 a piece. I never was that into Superman though. He was too good, too strong, seemingly invincible...I couldn't relate. I grew up with the Superman movies though and as a kid, I enjoyed them...well, all but the last one with Dolph Lundgren. That one was terrible, but full of unintentional comedy which I always enjoy. Anyhoo...since Brett Ratner imploded the X-Men series this year, I'm really hoping Superman Returns is worth the while.
Sound Of Superman is a new compilation out by DC & Rhino to coincide with the release of Superman Returns on June 28th. It's not the soundtrack, just an unrelated, well-timed companion. It's full of songs about Superman, saving, heroes, and things of that nature. I can't and won't say I'm sold on the compilation as a whole. There are multiple bands I would have happily replaced with anything else. Alot of these artists are being dubbed as "up-and-coming" mainstream power-pop/rock bands, so you can guess that it's mostly style without substance. There are a couple that pass the mustard though, so it's worth checking out on iTunes or something like that and downloading a a few of the tracks.
The Academy Is... - Superman (R.E.M. Cover)
Nightmare Of You - Waiting For Superman (Flaming Lips Cover)
Sound of Superman sticks pretty much in the preteen appealing guitar rock vein--braver cover choices would have been to revisit 1975's funky "Black Superman Muhammad Ali" or Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Superman Lover." About as nutritious as a bucket of buttered popcorn with a root beer chaser, these songs go down easy but may leave you feeling like you want to sit down to a green salad of the originals. --Ben Heege
New Music From Merge Records:

White Whale is set to release it's new debut effort, WWI, on Merge Records. I've been listening and loving it since my friend, Wendy, sent it to me this weekend. I was immediately impressed with the album art...very cool. The nearest comparison to their sound that has been commonly made would be Okkervil River with the thematic nuances of The Decemebrists. Others are drawing comparisons to Big Star and Arcade Fire on a slower non-yelling, crashing and banging day. The album will be out July 25th.
From Lawrence, Kansas, White Whale is made up of members of bands failed and/or disbanded with the most notable probably being Rob Pope of The Get Up Kids.
White Whale - Nine Good Fingers
White Whale - The Admiral

8 Talk back to yo' mama!:
Actually R.E.M. covered "Superman" as well. It was originally performed by The Clique!
oh! thanks for the info TB, I was not aware of that! Dropping knowledge...whoop!
Have you seen "An Evening with Kevin Smith"? He talks about being asked to work up a script outline for this very same Superman movie for Warner Brothers; his anecdote was so hilarious that I was genuinely surprised to see this film making it to the big screen.
I hope you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams for going to see the movie, but one word of caution, if I may, the producer also gave us Wild Wild West a couple summers ago.
As for Kael, I wish Lex would take him down a big notch or two. Other than the Dark Knight graphic novel a few years ago (or has it been decades), he's never been given his comeuppance.
I'd have to agree - Superman is about least appealing/interesting superhero still in publication. Other than watching Batman kick his ass in the Dark Knight graphic novel - the story about Superman being raised in Communist Russia instead of the U.S. and ultiamtely replacing Stalin is the only interesting Superman story I've ever read.
As to the Superman soundtrack - they really should have spoken with Sam Beam about getting the Iron & Wine cover of Waiting for Superman on their comp (of course that is easier said that done). Nonetheless, the Iron & Wine version of that song is amazing.
i adore this blog and you!
...and before Jehovah was Yehweh (if I'm misspelling fine, cause the third name is spell right)and before Yehweh was El... at least according to Middle Eastern mythology... El as in Jor-El, as in Kal-El... could a couple of jewish kids from Ohio named Siegel and Shuster have known that, or did it linger on the shores of their consciousnesses to the Ocean of Big Mind... what Christ and Kal-El most share in common, and the reason Kal-El is referred to as Superman, is Strength with Compassion... Kal-El has enough strength to selfishly rule the cosmos, but chooses instead to serve others for goodness' sake... you know, my biggest worry with the Christ myth is millions of people expect the coming of the anti-Christ to be inevitable. So some guy who wants to rule the world can call himself the antiChrist and Christians would get out of his way because its inevitable Biblical prophecy anyway, and will only usher in the second coming of Christ... except, what if the mythology is endorsed by centuries' old elite to clear the way for Globalization, and after the Christians clear the way for the anti-Christ to bring closer the day of their blessed Lord's return, they find out it was all a fairytale to manipulate the crowning of the One selfish Man who guised himself as the antiChrist, and now that he has secured the throne, it can be revealed there ain't no savior coming... so the shielded serpent is the emblem of Superman, and the white in red and blue is tempered to gold... and only humankind can serve and affect human history...
Hello! I stumbled across this post through Hype Machine and downloaded the TAI track. I'm totally surprised by the strength of their cover, it's much fuller then I would have expected from them. Thank you for the track!
