A big thanks goes out to Leigh M. who provided us with the majority of today's collection. It's actually been a beautiful sunny Monday so far here in Indiana...all weekend was awesome weather. Top was down on the Jeep and the wind was blowing in my hair like Fabio. OK, hopefully not like Fabio...
From the ashes of Joy Division, after the suicide of Ian Curtis, arose New Order. "Blue Monday", released in 1983, is often seen as a very important crossover tracks of the 1980s electronica scene. Synthpop had already been a major force in British popular music for several years, but "Blue Monday" brought the influence and sound of the New York club scene over seas.At nearly 7 and a half minutes in length, it's one of the longest tracks to ever chart in the UK. The version here is the radio edit that comes in at just over 4 minutes. I don't have the full version, so if you can help me out?
As to the song's lyrical meaning? As with many of New Order's songs, the meaning of "Blue Monday"'s lyric has been the subject of much debate. Although Bernard Sumner never publicly discusses his lyrics, many people have surmised that "Blue Monday" concerns the suicide of Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis and the effect it had on his former bandmates. However, comparisons with the lyrics and the aftereffects of cocaine have also been made, which would fit in with the potentially drug related themes of many other New Order tracks (another legend has it that the band was on LSD while recording it, and after they finished the producers took them to a café to finish out their tripping while they went back and cleaned it up). It has also been suggested that the song is a reference to the Falklands War. - Wiki

I remember reading that they spent ages programing the vocals into a vocoder but the computer crashed at the last minute so Bernard Sumner had to sing it instead. sounds very New Order!
there was also a tune called 'How does it feel' by Electroset which was a rockier re-working of Blue monday.
The kylie version was a bootleg remix of 'can't get you out of my head...'

I have the original version on vinyl...nonetheless, listening to this song again brings back some very vivid memories for me. The summer of 83: I was very much into New Order (and went to see them at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, one of the most memorable shows ever), but also, the music reminds me of the weird drugged-out circle of philosophy majors I was hanging out with. We wore lab coats all summer, no other clothes, took a lot of acid, and talked about Nietche endlessly...the record "Power, Corruption and Lies" provided the soundtrack.
In relistening to the lyrics, despite the grand themes we imagined for this tune, I think it is just about a bitter break-up.
