Where Is My Mind

The Pixies

A big thanks to Deaf Indie Elephants who helped me put this one together (all the way from Venezuela!). Where Is My Mind? is from The Pixies' 1988 album Surfer Rosa. The song was written by Frank Black (Black Francis) while he attended the University of Massachusetts. His girlfriend at the time overheard the initial pieces of the song and told him "That's a good one, you should finish it". It went on to become one of the band's most popular songs. The song has been used in many movies and television shows, most notably Fight Club and Veronica Mars.

The Pixies : Surfer RosaAbout the album: Surfer Rosa was the Pixies' first full-length album. The cover art features a topless flamenco dancer and was originally entitled Gigantic, but it was changed to avoid misinterpretation of the album cover. The album title comes from the "Oh My Golly!" lyric "Besando, chichando con Surfer Rosa".

In 2001 Q magazine named Surfer Rosa as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 315 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It is also number 6 on Spin Magazine's list of the greatest 100 albums of 1985-2005. Finally, if this moves you, Kurt Cobain wrote in his journals numerous times that Surfer Rosa was his 2nd favorite album of all time (behind Raw Power by The Stooges).

I know there are a few others floating around out there, so if you have 'em - send them my way please!

Well your cover project is just fine. But can't you make a post a little bit different for not-so-retro people? I mean, I like these old bands & musics. But it would be nice to have covers from new musics, since a lotz of bands are making POP covers, like the ones from the No Doubt singer that I've now forgot the name.

Whatever, it's just a tip.

Sorry if my english sucks, I'm international baby.

I'll admit it, I flat out love your covers posts; I think I took about half of the "love will tear us apart" links, a handful of the stairway to heaven links and most of the Where is my mind songs.

Thanks very much for showing me all of these wonderful covers.

Awesome!

By the way, Velouria is covered quite a lot, too . . . just sayin'.

I should have seen you guys would get me wrong.
I didn't mean that is too old, like the classics. It's not new, that's what I was saying.

got one more "where is my mind" cover for you!

and had i known you wanted a cover of this, i could have hooked you up sooner!

At 5:07 PM, Blogger Dodge spat...

bethanne...i tried getting that, and meant to contact you. the link is no good...won't download.

At 5:33 PM, Blogger bethanne spat...

i fixed the links. i messed them up.

and you should have gotten my email with the song. :)

orbit does a pretty decent cover of this song and ghoti hook has a faster "punk" version. Then there is the ultimate Mr. Hopkins Computer version. I think he has it on his myspace page.

At 7:50 PM, Blogger cindy hotpoint spat...

I saw The Frames do a really excellent cover of this at a day show at SXSW 2005 -- I don't know if it's recorded anywhere though.

At 10:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Thanks for posting covers for the past few posts. I'm rocking out to Tegan and Sara's Prince Cover and Blunt's cover of the Pixies. They're fantastic.

At 11:18 PM, Blogger ack spat...

I don't have it on my work computer, but the Toadies do a fantastic cover of this song. It's on their live album.

At 11:24 PM, Anonymous Josh spat...

You are the best blog ever for this last series of posts.

I once made a cover CD of nothing but where is my mind. Though I don't actually have the MP3s on me anymore, I can tell you the following bands have covers of Where Is My Mind, to varying degrees of goodness:

Poingly
Ghoti Hook
Zombina & The Skeletones
Azucarillo Kings (This is one brilliant)
David Olsen
Ricksaw...at least I think that's what their name was...

If I ever find the cd, I'll rip it and forward the music to ye.

James "Rhyming slang" Blunt covering Pixies is one the most ghastly, distressing, depressing things I have ever heard.
It has ruined my year. I doubt very much if I shall get out of bed tomorrow.

Some of the others are pretty good though.

At 6:34 AM, Blogger Don't Need Anything spat...

i dont think i still have a copy but i know the frames have done this one too.

i shall see.

At 9:40 AM, Anonymous kaufman spat...

I've listened to the Chenard Walcker songs a few times now and cannot figure them out - is it just me? I don't hear anything at all resembling the Pixie's song in them. I'm thinking that they are just different songs with the same name.

At 12:02 PM, Blogger bryan spat...

while not a cover, it's still pretty cool - DJ Mojo (from the Death Disco party in NYC) made a mashup of "Where is My Mind" and "Woo-ha" by Busta Rhymes that just kills me every time he plays it. you should get him to send you that one.

At 10:59 PM, Anonymous Stl_ben spat...

hey does anyone have a link or can they send me the james blunt cover?? (I know i am a loser for liking james blunt, but i must get some cred points for loving this site?)

um, ignore my last comment, for some reason i scrolled right over the james blunt link, i am a loser

there is a rap group that also samples this song. i found it on emusic. its called "hold up" by a group called girl talk. horrible name for a rap group. sounds pretty good though.

At 5:21 AM, Blogger It's Ted spat...

Where did you get that stunning Dylan/Pixies version?
ted

At 3:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

I didn't even know there were covers for that song. Usually when I say "Pixies" people go "Huh?"

Cool.

At 4:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Thanx a lot for all those versions of WHERE IS MY MIND. James Blunt is sursprising... not so bad. In guess there were Versions done by Veruca Salt and also some from BREEDERS...

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Koljavanhorne spat...

thanx a lot for all these versions of on of my favourite pixies songs. frank black of his own brought the title of the song up to its best ;0) After this I found a great respect of the bands to the pixies, because the most of them made a job which were very similar to the original. Shine on - melvin

At 10:29 AM, Blogger Chenard Walcker spat...

Kaufman, you're right. "Where is my mind" is also the name of a song of the 60's covered by such obscure artists as Pesky Gee (1969) and Camel (1969), the latter being the one i sampled the voice from to do the tracks.

So there's no direct link with the Pixies, though it's because i'm a big fan of the Pixies that this old song came to my attention.

Both tracks are taken from the album Moo to be downloaded here :

oh my god!
The files seem to have been removed?
I can't listen to all those great cover versions anymore?

Does anybody know what has happened?
Or is it just my Opera 9 Beta that can't handle the files anymore?

Greetings to all the listeners,
Stefan

As much as viagra has rescued the people from the cruel grip of erectile dysfunction it has also proved to be a curse to many because of wrong conception and wrong interpretation of its functioning. People buy viagra with the notion of having an extra erotic night without actually having the need to. Nowadays Viagra is also easily accessible and anyone can buy viagra online. In addition viagra online is more often than not cheap viagra i.e. a discounted version. People can easily get Viagra from the online pharmacies using wrong information. But in this way they will harm no one but their own selves, so it is always handy to have a clear conception of the drug one is taking.

The chances of contracting erectile dysfunction goes up substantially with age, increasing significantly above the age of sixty-five-which is rapidly approaching for the baby boomers. Although erectile dysfunction becomes more likely with advancing age, there is certainly no age cutoff for a sexually fulfilling life. Some men enjoy sexual activity even in their eighties and nineties. http://www.buy-viagra-with-us.com
