In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Neutral Milk Hotel

One of the few records to ever receive a perfect 10.0 by Pitchfork Media, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was released in 1998 on Merge and then later re-released in 2005 by Domino. It is widely considered one of the best indie rock records out there. While it's not my cup of tea all the way through, the title track has always been a favorite of mine.

Neutral Milk Hotel were a key member of the Elephant 6 collective, formed after Jeff Mangum left the band, The Olivia Tremor Control. In an Aeroplane, according to Mangum, is a work conceptually motivated by the horrific fate of Anne Frank (his reading of The Diary Of A Young Girl (Anne Frank)) and similarly overwhelming tragedies.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Matt Pond PA - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Rilo Kiley - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (Live)
The Jesus Vibes - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Deadboy and the Elephantmen - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Dresden Dolls - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

If you have any covers of this song and would like to contribute, please send them my way. Thanks!

Not In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, but Mike Doughty did a cover of King of Carrot Flowers on his "The Gambler" EP. iTunes-only, pretty okay, if you like Doughty.

From what I understand, didn't Pitchfork rescind its original review of this record and *then* give it a 10.0? I'm not sure what the original rating is, but that's just lame, if, in fact, it's true.

At 6:41 PM, Blogger Dodge spat...

Ohh, I don't know either...that is interesting and I would like to know as well, because it would in fact be very, very lame.

Anyone?

The Jesus Vibes - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

My favourite cover of this song.

On a side note, The Dresden Dolls cover of Two-Headed Boy is superb. Did they cover Aeroplane too? What happened to the file? I'd love to have it.

At 7:52 PM, Blogger Kevin spat...

Here ya go, Dodge. From this article: http://www.cjr.org/issues/2006/3/butler.asp. That last quote from Schreiber pretty much explains why I detest Pitchfork:

But when unexpected problems arise, the staff makes decisions on a case-by-case basis, and sometimes those decisions draw criticism. Last year, Schreiber and Plagenhoef decided that the reissue of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” album deserved more than the 8.7 rating they had given the original release. So they pulled the old review and replaced it with a new one — and a new rating of a perfect 10.0. Schreiber was surprised when readers complained. “I didn’t think anyone would miss the old review,” he wrote in an e-mail. “Turns out people will whine about anything.”

At 9:58 PM, Anonymous Stumpy spat...

I hated ITAOTS the first 5 times I heard it. Couldn't understand what people were raving about and why I wasted good money on the LP. Then something grabbed me on the 6th listen. Then something else on the 7th. I've probably listened to it 500+ times and I still get something new from it every time. I have been known to call it "The Album Of My Life."

It may take 6 listens to grab you, maybe 10, maybe 100. But it WILL grab you. That is why I don't think it is "lame" to revise its rating. What you hate today you may love tomorrow. It happens with records, lovers, food, and just about everything else in your life. You grow, you change, you learn to appreciate things you previously couldn't grasp. Patience and persistence seem to always pay off.

At 11:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

When you're a critic you can't speak in such relativistic terms: "That is why I don't think it is "lame" to revise its rating. What you hate today you may love tomorrow." That's what separates the critic from the casual listener; therefore, it is lame.

At 11:47 PM, Anonymous Stumpy spat...

What an incredibly sophomoric and pretentious statement (not to mention a juvenile, preemptive use of "lame")! No wonder you hide in your anonymity. How old/naive are you? Being a critic does not insulate you from relativism. Paid, professional critics admit they routinely misjudge the artistic merit (whether it be too high or too low) of a particular piece. It's part of being human! Your understanding/appreciation of an art form will change through experience. Most critics simply don't have the luxury of retracting their original review. I bet your #1 album of '06 will not be your tops at year's end, and not just because better records are released later this year. You will feel differently about said album in December than you do now. Unless you live in an emotional and cultural vacuum.

At 12:04 AM, Blogger Dodge spat...

Stumpy does make a great point, if I were to re-write my "Best of 2005 List" now, it would be quite different!

At 12:13 AM, Blogger Kevin spat...

Yeah ... what he said. Well written, Stumpy. Schreiber's quote -- “Turns out people will whine about anything" -- is so patronizing it's unreal. If you're not offended by that, then there's something wrong with you.

A critic's integrity pretty much rests in his or her ability to analyze and critique a piece of art in that moment in time. And just because feelings about said piece of art may change, doesn't give them the right to go an revise their original review. Do you see Rolling Stone, Spin or Roger Ebert or any publication say, "oh, i'm sorry, we made a mistake. We actually do like this album (or movie). We're now giving it 5 stars! We regret the error"? I'll answer that for you: no, you don't.

You can't just go revising these things. A review reflect a writer's opinions feeling of the album. That Schreiber felt differently doesn't give him the right to rescind the original. If he liked the album so much, he should have written the damn review from the beginning. Assuming someone else wrote the original review, Schreiber's not revising his own opinion (or even Pitchfork's) about it, but someone else's, which is just wrong.

I work at a newspaper and editors never tell their reviewers how they should feel about a CD or a movie. That's what this boils down to.

At 8:22 AM, Anonymous b chapman spat...

kevin is spot on. if a critic can revise his reviews on a whim what's the point of the original review? it's not about what history proves, it's the (supposed) expert opinion of the reviewer, at that time. changing reviews hints at pitchfork's insecurities.

At 8:43 AM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

if i remember correctly pitchfork also re-rated the first sufjan stevens album. and then plastered the site with ads for the album for the next gazillion months. how LAME.

At 5:27 PM, Anonymous radmike spat...

maybe at the least they should have issued a disclaimer, but seriously who gives a shit? Read the original here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20021213042559/http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/n/neutral-milk-hotel/in-the-aeroplane-over-the-sea.shtml

The old review really didn't do it justice, and besides the reviewers are two different people. If there's a problem here, it isn't that they revised the review, its that they didn't provide links to the old, or put a disclaimer, etc. Even still, the old review isn't even helpful; it doesn't provide much justification for the rating, and reads more like a short promo. What's on the site now is a well thought out analysis.

Finally, its not like this is historical revisionism. Review depend on a shit-ton of factors, including the static work itself, the author, the cultural context, the current time period and how that cultural context has shifted or changed over time, or even what the critic had for breakfast that day. It sounds like pitchfork made a judgement that the original review blew goat chunks, and wanted to write a proper review. Maybe Rolling Stone et. al. should revise reviews, if they aren't done right the first time. And right from wrong? Pitchfork is a commercial site, and they own the rights to the written content therein. They can do whatever the fuck they please with it. I don't think this is a case of bad ol' Schreiber forcing his revisionist history of indie rock on some poor pitchfork reviewer.

So no, Kevin is not spot on, sorry. How is this about pitchfork's insecurities? Reviews are a critique of a piece of culture, period. Think of it this way, two reviewers write review about ITAOTS, and pitchfork just took the better one. If this were an individual critics personal site, and they were revising an old review, its in a different ethical context.

At 5:58 PM, Blogger Kevin spat...

Radmike,

It doesn't matter if the original review didn't do the album justice. That's *your* opinion, which is the whole point of a review. You're allowed to agree or disagree with a review and the reviewer.

Maybe Pitchfork should have thought about the points you made BEFORE publishing the original. Of course, reviews depend on a ton of factors, including the author. That's kind of the point. You, as a reader, start to identify with reviewers. Why do you think someone like Roger Ebert has made such a name for himself. He writes his reviews, whether you agree with him or not, and the Chicago Sun-Times has employed him for this. That's what Schreiber was doing with his original reviewer. He (presumably) PAID him for his opinion, for his review.

I think what b chapman is referring to when talking about Pitchfork's insecurities is that some albums hold iconic status among their readers. As an example, knowing what we know now about an album like Arcade Fire's "Funeral," which is to say, it's fucking good. What if Pitchfork originally gave it a 6.7 or whatever. But now, "Funeral" is pretty well-regarded as an excellent album among fans and such. And so these fans are like, "What the hell? How could Pitchfork give this a 6.7??" Maybe Pitchfork starts feeling insecure about their original review. So does that give them the right to revise the review?

You say that maybe Rolling Stone should revise reviews if "they aren't done right the first time." There's no such thing. You can't be right or wrong in a review. It's an opinion. I can say I think Sufjan Stevens' Illinois is a friggin' masterpiece. Dodge will say it blows. Neither of us is right or wrong. We just have our own opinions.

However, I do agree that Pitchfork has made a major mistake by not writing a disclaimer explaining the new rating or that they changed it all together.

Bottom line: It's deceiving. How can you trust a publication that will rescind and revise reviews like that?

One of those times I wished I'd had a recorder of some kind on me: The Wrens' impromptu cover of "Two-Headed Boy" in Denton, TX last August.

to answer the Dresden Dolls question way up there:

It was mislabled...it was the Two-Headed Boy cover. I just crossed it out instead of removing it.

At 10:35 AM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

this is one of the problems with pitchfork enjoying online access only. They couldn't retract it if they printed it. It is ingenuine of them to change the review. They could add an update review to the album, after all, some albums do take on a new status/life after time.

At 3:12 AM, Anonymous Razjml spat...

The Arcade Fire example isn't particularly apt, as it's largely BECAUSE of Pitchfork's rave review and constant cheerleading of Funeral that the Arcade Fire became so well known. I think Pitchfork should acknowledge that the new review is a revision, but radmike is right about the review. It was published back when In The Aeroplane came out, and a lot of the reviews from their early days aren't that great in terms of music journalism. It's about half a page long, to get an idea of it. When he says it's "not that great," he doesn't mean the opinion of the writer, but the quality of the writing itself. And if I recall it was given an 8.9 or so, which by Pitchfork standards isn't much different from a 10 anyways.

At 4:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Just a little correction, the Deadboy and the Elephantmen version is not Deadboy and the Elephantmen. It is Dax Riggs doing a solo show without Tess.

hey Dodge, did you have to rip wwjblog a new one? maybe he doesn't know rilo kiley. and if not, who cares? "thanks for playing"? dude, lighten up.

For the record, I'm pretty sure Rolling Stone did the same thing with their online review of Kid A.. changed it to 5 stars after the fact.

hey, i looked it up and Jeff Tweedy did do a NMH cover (King of Carrot Flowers, pt 1) on 1/29/05 -> see http://wilcobase.com/song.php?song_key=392

anyway, that cover would definitely make me crap my pants - anyone have it?
