God Only Knows
The Beach Boys, if you don't all ready know, were a pop group formed in California in the early 60s. They are widely regarded as one of the most influencial bands in pop history. Pet Sounds is easily the best Beach Boys album, in my opinion. Released in 1966, it's full of great songs. One of the most widely covered is God Only Knows. You may also know it as the theme song to HBO's Big Love
Pet Sounds has complex orchestral arrangements throughout the album, and this song is no exception. Moreover, God Only Knows features Carl Wilson's voice just as prominently as brother Brian's, and it's maybe Brian's pinnacle as a composer, arranger and producer.
Another interestng fact: God Only Knows is known to have been the first pop song ever released in the U.S. to have the word "God" in the title (because of which many radio stations in the U.S. refused to play it.)

Michael Stipe produced and sang backup on a Mandy Moore track of "God Only Knows" off the "Saved" soundtrack, too.
I believe Joss Stone covered God Only Knows on GAP's Favorite CD (or a similar title)

Ms Longet was a French actress--very beautiful, of marginal talent. She's best known for the 1976 killing her boyfriend, Olympic skier Spider Sabich.

I don't have a copy, sad to say, but I'm pretty sure Andy Williams (yes, he was once Mr. Longet) recorded a version as well.
The Claudine Longet version is on the Gilmore Girls soundtrack and she was mentioned during the first season of the show. If that doesn't have people scrambling around trying to figure out who she is then I'm afraid nothing will.
Personally, I became enchanted with her when I saw her perform in Peter Sellers' hilarious movie The Party. I have all her records and I think she is fantastic. (There are quite a few decent Easy Listening versions of God Only Knows... I think the infinitely nauseating lounge singer Jack Jones does a version on a cool comp called "California Music & Disney Girls" that also has a couple of rare Terry Melcher tracks on it.)
And she didn't kill that skier, she was actually on her way back up to the lodge to get her gun.
(Just kidding about that part)

I gotta concur with all of you who say that this is indeed a great post. I'm looking forward to listening to these covers. And thanks anonymous for the tip about that comp with the rare Terry Melcher tracks on it. I'm a huge Beach Boys fan and I haven't even heard of this until now. I also wanted to point out that "God Only Knows" was a huge hit in the UK as was Pet Sounds in general. In fact they were the #1 group in the UK at the time even ahead of The Beatles. However, I think that Friends or So Tough is the best Beach Boys album.
