MJ's Pick of the Week: Breakestra
So my pick this week is Breakestra. Their latest album is entitled Hit The Floor, released by Ubiquity Records. Instead of detailing what I like about them I'm going to share how this music relates to me.It seems like every song I hear relates to a memory and the song Family Rap is no different. When first hearing it I was taken back to 1998 and an impromptu meeting with Dodge and his friends, at the University of Kentucky, while attending a Dave Matthews concert with Dee. This wasn't the first time I had met Dodge, but it was the first time I actually found him bearable to be around. To understand my dislike of Dodge you would have to know that he was always a brat to me during our brief encounters. I didn't realize it at the time but he was a bit like the 7 year old that hits you in the arm because he thinks you're cute. This behavior caused me to retaliate with contempt.

But on the night of the concert, he was different. As the night ended and we were walking down the alleyways of Lexington, returning from the bars, Dodge sang James Brown's Sex Machine at the top of his lungs and soon his friends joined in. He was funny, somewhat cute, and actuallly charming. We didn't hang much that night nor did we even start what would become our road to marriageville till over a year later. But I think seeing him be his silly self with his friends, instead of trying too hard to impress made a definite impression on me and helped me realize Dodge may not be that bad after all.
Breakestra, the instant you hear them you'll think funk. For people who like: George Clinton and the Pfunk Allstars, Ben Harper, The Roots, Blackalicious, and James Brown.
True-Skool.org writes "they (Breakestra) pave the way for the 'funkily naive' to embrace the rhythmic revolution that James Brown kicked off more than thirty years ago."
