Guillemots...Peter Buck presents...and more.

Who are one of my new favorite bands of 2006? The Guillemots are being predicted to dominate the UK indie pop/rock scene in 2006 by the BBC and I can see why. They are a multi-national, multi-instrumental quartet named after a type of penguin, and we all know how hot penguins are these days! You don't know? Penguins are big. They were big in 2005 and can only get bigger in 2006. So...you know a band named after a type of penguin with a sound like this is gonna be big. Get on board now! I also just found out from Torr that they will be at SXSW!"their eccentric invention and top-drawer songwriting that covers everything from joyous anthems to haunting heartbreakers."
"Singer and songwriter Fyfe Dangerfield says he is trying to make music for the masses - with a twist. "It's definitely pop music and I've got no qualms about that," he says. "I don't think there's a greater art than writing a three-minute pop song that people can sing when they're drunk."
Guillemots - Trains To Brazil
Guillemots - Through The Windowpane
Treasure Hunt:
Perusing the used sections of my favorite CD stores is one of my favorite time wasting activities. Recently I found The REM Collection Disc 3: Peter Buck Presents. It's a 2005 UK disc - a 15-track compilation given away with Uncut Magazine and includes an exclusive live REM track - Boy In The Well, plus tracks by Ry Cooder, Orange Juice, Stephen Malkmus, Sufjan Stevens, The Pernice Brothers, Belle & Sebastian and many more. Really a nice find for $5. Here are a few of my favorite songs from it:The Pernice Brothers - There Goes The Sun
Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane
John Doe - The Losing Kind
Here is the complete tracklisting. I'd really like to find Disc 1 and 2 now.
Here are a couple other tracks from various blogs that have been bringing joy to my ears...
Clem Snide - Enrique Iglesias Mole (live) - I don't know where I got this one, but if it's from you, let me know.
Killer Mike - My Chrome from Can I Bring My Gat?
The Road to SXSW
...is paved with many an exciting new band, and I Guess I'm Floating clues us all in on another one: Cuff The Duke. Man. I. can. not. wait. until. SXSW.

8 Talk back to yo' mama!:
Penguins are so hot.
I like Guillemots a lot too, though I wonder if they're not a little too lush and romantic to capture America. They sound like Prefab Sprout to me. "Trains to Brazil" is brilliant.
Guillemots, the birds, look like penguins but I don't think they're a type of them, are they? They both do dive for their food.
you might have got the enrique link from me, but i got it from somewhere else. pass it on.
love guillemots, they're the shit right now.
check ebay for the other two.
I've got one of the other disks, the Mike Mills one I think. Can share it with you if you want it.
