All you cool kids out there probably know
Cary Brothers from the
Garden State soundtrack, but if you don't, his song on the soundtrack is
Blue Eyes and you should check it out. What you may or may not know is that Cary Brothers is one man, not a pair of brothers. Dodge & MJ (The Lovely Wife) had a chance to talk with Brothers at his show last night at The Patio, opening for Aqualung, for quite a while and it was a captivating and stirring conversation...

Brothers is originally from Nashville, but moved to Los Angeles after college. It's interesting because Brothers says he was highly influenced by British pop bands such as The Cure, The Smiths and such, but his sound doesn't escape his Nashville roots blending those influences with a bit of country that he says was simply ingrained in him at birth. Brothers says he first picked up a guitar when he was thirteen years old and fell in love with it. He started writing songs a couple years later. While struggling as a musician in the big pond that is L.A., he befriended then struggling actor, Zach Braff. Brothers and Braff would hang out and see shows together and once Braff found success on
Scrubs and put together
Garden State, he invited Brothers to come look at a piece of the movie in hopes of using one of Brothers' songs in the background. Cary obliged and brought along ten songs for the two to listen to with the movie. Amusingly,
Blue Eyes was Braff's choice, but was probably number ten out of the ten on Cary's list. Nevertheless, Brothers was grateful and has received much attention due to the movie and soundtrack's success. Cary says he is very proud to be on the soundtrack and associated with the movie. Brothers revealed that he is and has been wooed by many different record labels, but has refused to sign. He says with his royalties from
Garden State he has enough money to hopefully put out two records on his own. He hopes by staying true to himself and his music without the influence of a label, his sound and songs will follow more of a grassroots movement to recognition. Basically and admirably, Cary Brothers isn't selling out. His enthusiasm for his music and remaining true to his roots was exciting, refreshing and contagious. He wants "to tour the hell out of these songs" and build a following. In my opinion, if he plays like he did last night, it will be easy.
The set last night was intimate and melodic. Cary Brothers has been described as “a thinking man’s singer/songwriter like Elliott Smith, but at times flashes a melodic brilliance along the lines of Glen Phillips or Adam Duritz". Melodic brillance is right; the women in the room were as dreamy eyed as they come. Brothers'
"All The Rage" EP is out in stores and is selling well for an indie release (no promotional money), so if you don't have it you can buy it
here or
here. For what it is worth, I highly reccomend it.

Riding the high from our time with Cary Brothers (he really was so down-to-earth, congenial and real), we were excited when Matt Hales and 2 of the members of
Aqualung took the stage. Hales revealed that their bassist was stuck in London with some sort of legal troubles, but his absence didn't seem to diminish their sound. It was an extremely high quality set. Hales' voice is beautiful and strong, his piano playing suberb and his interaction real and genuine. I won't delve into Aqualung's history as I posted on them before them Monday before the show, but I will say that Aqualung met and exceeded every expectation. Unfortunately and obviously, we didn't get a chance to talk to Hales or any of the members of Aqualung as they were surrounded after the show by their fans. Maybe next time.
