But is it really surprising that Franz Ferdinand's follow-up is underwhelming? Nah. I think they got big heads after that whole "Kidz Bop 7" cover thing blew up.

Huzzah for the Fruits Bats love. Kinda surprised to see CYHSY so high even though I like them.

I wonder what Dolly Parton would think of the company she's keeping here on MOKB...

At 4:07 PM, Blogger peter spat...

awesome list. I was wondering if either of you two were going to mention LCD Soundsystem. That should be on every top/honorable mention list this year.

thanks.

At 4:09 PM, Anonymous uwmryan spat...

Nice list Dodge. Glad to see Lucero, DangerDoom, and AIH crack your top 25.

At 4:14 PM, Blogger Rachelandthecity spat...

i feel vindicated that Lucero made your top 10...

At 4:18 PM, Blogger Kevin spat...

Nice choices ... good to see Blackalicious in an otherwise sorry year for hip-hop.

At 4:31 PM, Blogger Chris spat...

nice list, man. i enjoyed reading your sub-categories. and apparently i need to check out the rest of the lucero album.

At 4:52 PM, Anonymous Seithen spat...

Nice list and blog :P

dodge, well done man. lots of good ones to sift through this year for sure.

At 5:21 PM, Blogger monkey spat...

Elevator? Really? At least it's not officially in the top 25, but you have to admit it was a sharp decline for HHH.

But I'm glad that someone else admits that Sufjan Stevens is not a god. I like the idea of what he's doing, but it surely is not my style either.

At 5:23 PM, Blogger JAX spat...

amazing list. Im working on my for dec. 1st. sad that lcd almost made the cut but not quite (def love that record)

Tapes N Tapes are simply fucking amazing. their taking over the world right now.

hehehe thanks for "Humping" with me. :)

At 6:22 PM, Anonymous matthew spat...

I've only just started listening to Tapes 'n Tapes, but it's a really great album, and I'm feeling the same way about it.

And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's soured on Ryan Adams. I loved everything up to Cold Roses, but that was so bad I didn't even want to bother with Jacksonville City Lights...

At 8:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Clap Your Hands and say......

O V E R R A T E D ! ! ! ! !

At 9:32 PM, Blogger brian spat...

I'm happy to see Kings of Leon on your list, I love them. 'The Bucket' is perfect, and anyone who doesn't like it is lying to themselves, and that is the real tragedy.

At 10:31 PM, Anonymous Mike spat...

I gotta say it's a great list, but...

I LOVE Ryan Adams and Cold Roses. Just listen to "Sweet Illusions," "Let It Ride," "If I Am a Stranger," "Friends," and "How Do You Keep Love Alive."

I've been a fans of Adams since his best Heartbreaker, but Cold Roses isn't too far behind. I will agree that Jacksonville City Nights was a bit disappointing.

At 11:11 PM, Blogger Rock Snob spat...

Fantastic list Dodge!

At 2:11 AM, Blogger David spat...

Jose Gonzalez' album first came out in 2003, hardly new

At 8:47 AM, Anonymous ElLorenzo spat...

yesyes: Okkervil river, architecture in hs, dangerdoom, wolfparade, spoon ,cyhsy, decemberists
nono: rouge wave, vhsorbeta, fruit bats, subways (yuck), stars, blocparty, nada sruf (nonoNONO), brendon benson
don'tcarecare: everything else

At 10:55 AM, Blogger Dodge spat...

David, regardless of hoe new it is to the world, Veneer's US Release Date: September 06, 2005...so, it qualifies.

CYHSY is not overrated, they are over-saturated...regardless of how much you are sick of hearing about them, they are excellent...that's why you hear TOO MUCH about them.

thanks for checking it out and the discussion kids!

am glad somebody is finally appreciating what damian marley has to say, much love!

At 12:49 PM, Blogger solace spat...

VHS or Beta's record came out in Sept 04

At 5:31 PM, Blogger marc spat...

you didn't dig the devendra album?! you should be sorry.

anyhow, i read some of your old blog posts about tegan and sara. check out my blog sometime if you have the chance; i just posted an instore video of them we filmed.

At 7:00 PM, Anonymous Australiandave spat...

Whoa, Dodge.
You totally panned Franz! This makes me sad...at least pan Weezer!

At 10:09 PM, Anonymous music_police spat...

Saying Devendra and Sufjan isn't your 'stizz' is just a cop-out... if you don't like an entire genre of music (folk'ish' maybe?) then qualify your list by saying so... otherwise your picks are your picks. No need to placate the masses by apologizing for not enjoying an album that a lot of other folks like. I don't particularly enjoy the new Nickelback record but I certainly wouldn't feel the need to mention it along with a list of my favorites... saying an album isn't your 'stizz' is ignorant... leaving an album off your list because it's bad (or not as good as a bunch of other albums) is your opinion... which is what this list is supposed to be. Right?

At 11:14 PM, Blogger Dodge spat...

Music_police, you're talking in circles...of course this is MY list, which is why I can put whatever I want on it.

I love folk music, read the blog regularly, go back and check the archives, love it. i felt the need to qualify these two albums because they will surely be in almost every blog's top 20...just not mine cause they aren't my 'stizz' and i don't see what's so ignorant about saying something isn't your style or that you don't enjoy it. i've been vocal about my non-passion towards Sufjan since the album came out, I'm mearly reiterating that here in the recap of 2005 albums.

At 5:32 PM, Blogger callmemickey spat...

your list is essentially spot on... couldnt agree more with the "I'm sorry, it's just not my stizz." selections

At 5:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

for the older folk--what is a 'stizz'?

At 5:59 PM, Blogger Rachelandthecity spat...

"Stizz" is Uncle Grambo speak for style...

At 6:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

No Ryan Adams at least Jacksonville City nights could have been on there at the back somewhere that was his best release in awhile

And what no Dungen whats up

At 6:36 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Are you seriously not even putting Bright Eyes Im Wide Awake album on the list at all for me that should be number one

And Im glad you put the Kings of Leon on there alot of people forgot about them

At 6:51 PM, Blogger Trevor Jackson spat...

Great list. I had that Harvey Danger record in major rotation for weeks. It came out of nowhere, but what perfect pop.

At 10:40 PM, Blogger Jason spat...

I really like the list except the presence of Kings of Leon and Kaiser Chiefs.
Other than that I agree with you on most part. I can't believe you don't dig Sufjan Stevens..

At 7:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

I almost forgot it's getting to be this time of year again. I sure hope Andrew Bird gets more play overall than he does here.

At 12:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

VHS or Beta rocks the house but it's an 2004 release. And no Sigur Ros?

At 3:20 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Get in on the Tapes 'n Tapes before the backlash begins!
Amazing album

At 5:39 PM, Blogger darwin spat...

You could have saved yourself a lot of time and just linked to Pitchfork cause in about two weeks they're going to post a top-50 that looks an awful lot like this. I bet your pitchfork factor is up around 75%! Truly... the mark of a discerning musical taste.

Happy Holidays to you, too, you wanker. ;D

=darwin
PS - I'm thankful for Medi0creKYBlog, as both motivation and cautionary example.

At 1:20 PM, Blogger Dodge spat...

awesome, thanks Darwin, I've missed you.

There are other albums that are just outside of the list such as Dungen, Bright Eyes and Sigur Ros. THey're good, but I have my reasons for not including them....VHS or Beta is a 2004 release, my bad on that...I always seem to throw one that's incorrect. Anyway, if your favorite album is not on the list, it doesn't mean I don't like it, unless it's on the "not my stizz list"...I could revamp this list today and it might be totally different based on everything I've been listening to over the holiday...anyway, thanks for the discussions kids.

At 1:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Dodge, this list rocks buddy. Great work!

I love the fact that Nada Surf and Brendan Benson are in the top 10. Nice!

Great list!
Wheres "the books"!?

At 1:17 AM, Anonymous melina spat...

Spinto Band will "Crack the whip" into your Top 10 for sure with more listening.

Definitely one of my Tops 'o '05.

Nice list & thanks!

At 9:46 AM, Anonymous Dee spat...

Ah, Nada Surf makes me happy. I'm glad someone showed them love. That's the only thing that got me through that 11 hour drive from IN to MN yesterday. But I'm not happy with the Franz reference. The Fallen? Evil and a Heathen? C'mon. Great stuff.

At 5:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Well it is clear that you have a very lame taste in music. And also the jose album was realased oh lest say 2003 to be pollite. ciao

At 7:31 PM, Blogger Matt spat...

Jeez. Let's all be nice, okay?

Good list, Dodge. Ours will look pretty different, but that's what makes music so fun!

At 9:54 AM, Blogger Worst Weather Ever spat...

where the hell is The National?

At 10:57 AM, Blogger Dodge spat...

Jose's Veneer US Release Date: September 06, 2005 - THUS IT QUALIFIES. It's ok to rip me a new one, I love it, but at least have the guts not to be anonymous when doing so...that's weak.

One thing I always respect about Darwin when he rips me is that he has the guts to let me know it him who's ripping me, so I'll always listen to him...Anonymous, not so much.

The National is good, and qualifies for an almost but not quite top 25 for me. now that I'm incorrect on VHS or Beta's release date, they get even closer.

Moka, The Books is good shiz, and a great concept album from what I've heard, but I haven't heard all of it and it's a little too M83 for me from what I have heard...meaning, I can't listen to it all the time.

At 3:58 PM, Anonymous J-bo spat...

This is great.

One not on the list that would make my top 5 is Death Cab for Cutie - Plans. This album has grown sooo much....i love it!

i don't care for the haters of CYHSY. they have put soo much out there in so fast that has been a good burger.

At 7:58 PM, Anonymous Nigel spat...

Great list... My own Top 20 Songs of 2005 is here.

At 4:57 PM, Blogger F.J. Delgado spat...

money list, good work summarizing what was a pretty solid year.

definitely disagree about Ryan Adams and Franz Ferdinand, but it wouldn't be music if there weren't people with different tastes.

rock on.

At 7:16 PM, Anonymous chris spat...

god damn. i hear you loud and clear with your "almost in the top 25" and top 2 you didnt get.

At 4:37 PM, Anonymous m spat...

am i the only one that dosnt think that spinto band song ripped that french kicks riff?

not that things like that matter. i just think its one of those funny musical accidents.

everyones fucking everyone. you gonna eat that?

At 10:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Thanks for the list, just wanted to add that the Beck song is spelled "Que Onda Guero" ...I've seen that spelled wrong on a couple of blogs, not sure why.

At 8:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

I seriously can't believe you were disapointed with Fiona's new one. It got number 4 in Rolling Stone's Top 50 of 2005. I can see how Sufjan isn't your thing but it's an amazing album.

At 2:57 PM, Anonymous Anonymous spat...

Cold Roses was great, Jacksonville City Nights was even better. It's hard to believe someone would dislike those albums and then like a shitty band like CYHSY whom must have the absolute worst, most ridiculous sounding voice I have ever heard. I'm not even sure how people can listen to that with a straight face. It's like someone is playing a big joke on all the "hipsters". It's either that or the indie crowd think it's bad enough that no one else will possibly like it which helps their indie cred. Either way, those guys are worthless.

At 4:40 PM, Blogger Dodge spat...

I seriously can't believe you last two are so worked up about it. And if Rolling Stone is your basis for greatness...REEVALUATE.

At 1:40 AM, Blogger Skrinkle spat...

Wow...

You're like, my musical soulmate.

Thank you for not making me feel lame for not being in love with Sufjan Stevens like everyone else, even though I like some folk.

Loved your picks for best albums of the year with the exception of VHS or Beta (Better than White Stripes?). Have you given Hard-Fi a listen?
